Dotato di una genialità contraddittoria e trasversale, Miles Davis appare come un personaggio mai del tutto risolto e completamente raccontato; una sorta di libro mai finito e sempre aperto, che sembra riscriversi ed adattarsi ad ogni epoca, senza mai sentire il peso degli anni ed i limiti del tempo. Mentre si analizza la sua discografia, anche nelle fasi più complesse ed irrazionali, se ne subisce inspiegabilmente il fascino, perfino quando l'armonioso incanto della costruzione sonora contrasta con le spigolosità umane e caratteriali del personaggio. Miles Davis è stato un'Araba Fenice capace di risorge dalle proprie ceneri ad ogni cambio di passo del jazz moderno, ad ogni mutamento della società e delle tendenze sonore all'interno dell'universo discografico: alcuni di questi cambiamenti furono da lui indotti. Davis si è saputo smarcare presto dal bop, dopo aver concepito album epocali, si è immerso nel cool fissandone i punti di ancoraggio, ha fatto del jazz modale il suo modus operandi, ha dato al jazz una scarica elettrica, ha abbracciato la causa dei ritmi urbani, seducendo i figli ed i nipoti dei suoi detrattori: molti hanno finito sistematicamente per imitarlo. Se la musica rappresenta lo spirito o lo stato d'animo che definisce un particolare periodo della storia, l'impulso elettrico di Miles Davis, tra il 1968 ed il 1975, si inserì nello spirito musicale dell'epoca aprendo il jazz al principio dei vasi comunicanti e alla ripetizione distorsiva basata sul groove, trascendendo o ripudiando le radici del jazz acustico. Davis resta un enigma avvolto in un mistero, nonostante la quantità di analisi musicali e ricostruzioni biografiche che hanno tentato di raccontarne l'esistenza non comune. Miles: Sketches Of Jazz prova ad inquadrare la figura del trombettista soprattutto attraverso un'analisi della sua discografia essenziale. Per almeno tre volte nell'arco della carriera, un suo album ha coinciso con un mutamento radicale, condizionando il jazz nel decennio a venire: alla fine degli anni '40 con le registrazioni che avrebbero dato vita a Birth of the Cool, nel 1959 con Kind of Blue e nel 1970 con Bitches Brew. Guascone, geniale, arrogante, bugiardo, proteiforme, visionario, mutevole, trasformista, anticipatore, vanesio ed opportunista: in massima parte la storia del jazz moderno è lui.
