About the Book

Memoirs of a Spaghetti Cowboy chronicles Tom Hunter's lifelong attempts to balance a passion for the arts with the demands of the real world. After growing up in Savannah, Georgia, he went on to travel the world as an actor, starring in spaghetti westerns for Dino deLaurentiis and co-starring in over a dozen more movies. The book serves up behind-the scenes glimpses at people that Hunter worked with over the years, among them Clint Eastwood, Robert Mitchum, Jack Palance, Uta Hagen, Burt Reynolds, Kirk Douglas, Johnny Mercer, Ava Gardner, even O.J. Simpson, and many more. In this book, Hunter also reflects on his writing career. The Human Factor, his first screenplay, was shot in Naples and starred Academy Award winner George Kennedy. Ted Koppel commended it on national television as the first film ever about terrorism against Americans living abroad. Not long after, Hunter found himself holding a squirming toddler named Charlie Sheen on his knee, while discussing Charlie's dad Martin's starring role in Hunter's second screenplay, The Final Countdown.
About the Author: Hunter's first book, the end-of-the-world thriller Softly Walks the Beast, earned top reviews and went into three printings. As spine tinglers go, 'Beast' is a beauty (Los Angeles Times). Hunter has also written two screenplays that were made into major motion pictures: The Human Factor, starring George Kennedy, about terrorism against Americans abroad; and The Final Countdown, starring Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen, about a giant aircraft carrier that travels back in time. Time Magazine praised that film: 'The Final Countdown' is as impressive a statement about the value and values of professional fighting men as one could hope to find these days. This realism also lends credibility to the fantastic tale unfolding aboard the mighty ship. ... 'The Final Countdown' is ... adult, intelligent and entertaining. Hunter also had a career as a film actor, starring in a dozen movies while based in Rome, Italy, where he got his start with Dino de Laurentiis in a series of spaghetti westerns. Memoirs of a Spaghetti Cowboy: Tales of Oddball Luck and Derring-Do is the uproarious account of those adventure-filled years. Hunter was born in Savannah, Georgia, and has lived and worked in New York City, Hollywood and Rome. While living abroad, he founded an off-Broadway-style English language theater, leading several seasons of experimental works to critical acclaim as director, writer and actor. After returning to the States, he founded and served as artistic director of the New England Repertory Company. Hunter currently lives in New England, where he is working on a sequel to Softly Walks the Beast tentatively titled The Last Man Standing on Martha's Vineyard.
