Maximien est un poete bien mysterieux et fuyant, a l'image de son oeuvre en perpetuel mouvement. Les six elegies qui nous sont parvenues, datees le plus souvent du debut du VIe siecle, se presentent d'abord comme une vaste deploration sur l'insoutenable vieillesse qui accable le poete et sur l'amour decu. Mais cette poesie cultive aussi une veine profondement ludique, incarnee notamment par la cinquieme elegie, qui reecrit une scene de fiasco ovidienne et presente la laudatio funebris parodique du sexe defaillant du poete. De la deploration funebre au pastiche savoureux, on chercherait en vain une unite reelle dans cette poesie baroque . Le lecteur y decouvre plutot l'habile souplesse d'un poete dont l'ethos multiple donne des visages inconciliables a la poesie.Pour mettre en perspective la valeur litteraire, ainsi que la portee anthropologique et ideologique des Elegies de Maximien, le present volume propose aussienfin, en annexes, une traduction commentee de pieces poetiques importantes qui n'avaient pas, jusqu'alors, fait l'objet d'une traduction francaise publiee: l'Appendix Maximiani et l'Epithalame pour Maximus d'Ennode de Pavie.Ancien eleve de l'Ecole normale superieure de la rue d'Ulm, agrege de lettres classiques, Benjamin Goldlust est maitre de conferences en langue et litterature latines a l'Universite Lyon III - Jean Moulin et membre de l'UMR HiSoMa (5189). Ses travaux de recherche concernent principalement la litterature latine de l'Antiquite tardive. Il est notamment le co-editeur de Le paien, le chretien et le profane. Recherches sur l'Antiquite tardive (Paris, 2009) et l'auteur de Rhetorique et poetique de Macrobe dans les Saturnales (Turnhout, 2010).
About the Author: Celui que l'on appelle couramment en francais Maximien - au risque d'une severe confusion avec l'Auguste de la fin du IIIe siecle, co-empereur de Diocletien -, ou, en gardant son nom latin, Maximianus, est un poete tres mal connu, sinon mysterieux . Le peu que l'on sait de lui provient majoritairement de son oeuvre meme, qui connut d'ailleurs un succes certain, puisqu'elle est presente dans plus de cinquante manuscrits, copies entre le IXe et le XVIe siecles. Il aurait vecu au tournant entre le Ve et le VIe siecle, fut inspire par Boece et aurait ete chretien. Ancien eleve de l'Ecole normale superieure de la rue d'Ulm, agrege de lettres classiques, Benjamin Goldlust est maitre de conferences a l'Universite Lyon 3 - Jean Moulin. Ses travaux de recherche concernent principalement la litterature latine de l'Antiquite tardive. Il est notamment le co-editeur de Le paien, le chretien, le profane.
