Set shortly after the events in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and after Dorothy Gale's departure back to Kansas, the protagonist of the novel is an orphaned male youth called Tip. For as long as he can remember, Tip has been under the guardianship of a cruel Wicked Witch named Mombi (who is the main antagonist) and lives in the northern quadrant called Gillikin Country in the Land of Oz. Mombi has always been extremely mean and abusive to Tip, calling him names and making him cook and clean for her.

He escapes the grasp of the old sorceress named Mombi after she threatens to transform him into a marble statue for playing a trick on her and he travels to the Emerald City to start a new life. In the process he creates two new companions, Jack Pumpkinhead and the Sawhorse. They are brought to life using a magical powder that Mombi obtains from a reclusive magician. Tip gets mixed up in a rebellion led by a young woman, Jinjur, who overthrows the Scarecrow as the Ruler of Oz.

Joining with the Tin Woodman, Tip and his friends seek to regain control of the Emerald City, but are not successful and must flee for their lives in a most unusual flying creature created from bits and pieces found in the palace. Eventually they make their way to enlist the support of Glinda the Good. Glinda succeeds in capturing Mombi and erasing her magical powers. However, in quashing the rebellion she restores the throne not to the Scarecrow, but to the rightful heir, a young girl named Ozma.

The Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow, now stuffed with paper money that's worthless in Oz except as stuffing, return to the Winkie Country with Jack Pumpkinhead, the Gump is disassembled at his request (though his head, which was a hunting trophy, can still speak), Glinda returns to her palace in the Quadling Country, the Wogglebug remains as Ozma's advisor, and the Saw-Horse becomes her personal steed.

About the Author: Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919), was an American author who was a specialist in children's books. He was particularly famous for his The Wonderful Wizard of Oz series, a sensational hit among children and continues to do so.

He was better known by his pen name L. Frank Baum.

His stories have formed the basis for such popular films as The Wizard of Oz (1939), produced by the famous Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. and Oz the Great and Powerful (2013).

Named "Lyman" after his uncle, Baum didn't like his first name much obviously and chose to be called by his middle name "Frank" instead.

Baum wrote about his purpose in introduction of his book: "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was written solely to pleasure children today. It aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heart-aches and nightmares are left out."
