Nur dann kann das Unternehmen die Kundenbedürfnisse durch ihr Produkt- / Leistungsangebot optimal befriedigen. Dies bedeutet: welche Kundengruppen wollen wir ansprechen und wie sehen diese Zielgruppen und Marktsegmente konkret aus? Die Marktsegmentierung untersucht die Zusammensetzung und Struktur der Zielgruppen, insbesondere auch ob Teilsegmente gebildet werden können oder ob sich mehrere heterogene Marktsegmente ergeben. (Kamenz 2001, S.40f) Segmentierung bedeutet ganz allgemein die Unterteilung einer vorab definierten Gesamtmenge in Teilmengen (Segmente) nach bestimmten Teilungskriterien. Jedes Segment sollte dabei in sich möglichst gleich (homogen) sein, alle Segmente sich hingegen deutlich voneinander unterscheiden (heterogen). Bei der Marktsegmentierung wird ein Gesamtmarkt in Teilmärkte untergliedert, zum Beispiel nach geographischen Gesichtspunkten (Westdeutschland/Ostdeutschland) oder nach Kundengruppen (Großverbraucher/Endverbraucher). Die Marktsegmentierung dient vor allem dazu, sogenannte Zielgruppen zu finden. Das sind aus der Gesamtheit aller möglichen Abnehmer diejenigen, die als Käufer in erster Linie infrage kommen, deren Marktbearbeitung demnach also auch am ehesten Erfolg verspricht (zielgruppen-orientiertes Marketing). Ein segmentspezifisches Vorgehen ist also eine Art von Konzentration oder Spezialisierung und damit (im Hinblick auf den Gesamtmarkt) eine Beschränkung, die sich ein Anbieter auferlegt und zwar in der Erwartung, dass ein solches Vorgehen gewinnversprechender ist als eine undifferenzierte Bearbeitung des Gesamtmarktes.
