Marie-Claire est un roman de Marguerite Audoux publié en 1910 aux éditions Fasquelle et qui a reçu la même année le prix Femina, ce qui lui a interdit de recevoir le Prix Goncourt, décerné une semaine plus tard, malgré le soutien d'Octave Mirbeau, auteur de la préface. C'est la première oeuvre de son auteur et à ce titre la plus autobiographique. Le roman s'est vendu à son époque à plus de 100 000 exemplaires Résumé. Marie-Claire évoque l'enfance et l'adolescence de l'auteur. La première partie relate la mort de la mère, le départ du père et les neuf années passées à l'orphelinat, l'Hôpital général de Bourges, période difficile, éclairée cependant par la présence tutélaire de soeur Marie-Aimée. La deuxième partie se situe à la ferme de Villevieille, où les premiers patrons de Marie-Claire, Maître Sylvain et Pauline, entourent la petite bergère d'une affection bienveillante. Dans la troisième partie, la jeune fille s'éprend d'Henri Deslois, le frère de la fermière qui a succédé à Pauline. La mère du jeune homme interdit à Marie-Claire de revoir Henri. Celle-ci retourne alors au couvent, où elle revoit soeur Marie-Aimée avant de partir pour Paris.
About the Author: Biographie. Marguerite Audoux Marguerite Audoux (1863-1937) est une romancière française, connue pour le succès et l'influence de son roman Marie-Claire. Marguerite Donquichote naît à Sancoins, dans le Cher, le 7 juillet 1863. À l'âge de trois ans, elle perd sa mère, et son père abandonne ses deux filles. Marguerite et Madeleine (l'aînée), d'abord confiées à une tante, passent neuf années à l'orphelinat de l'Hôpital général de Bourges. De 1877 à 1881, Marguerite est placée, en tant que bergère d'agneaux et servante de ferme, en Sologne à Sainte-Montaine, près d'Aubigny-sur-Nère. Les deux dernières années de cette période sont marquées par la rencontre d'Henri Dejoulx, avec qui la jeune fille vit un amour payé de retour, mais auquel la famille d'Henri, par peur d'une mésalliance, met un terme. L'orpheline s'établit alors à Paris, où elle vit des années noires en exerçant le métier de couturière. Le chômage la contraint de faire d'autres travaux pénibles, à la Cartoucherie de Vincennes et dans la buanderie de l'Hôpital Laennec. Pendant ces années de misère, en 1883, elle a un enfant qui ne survit pas, et dont l'accouchement pénible lui vaut une stérilité définitive.
