About the Book

The New Reality and Quest for the Other Worlds

It was while growing up as a child in India that astrophysicist Priyamvada Natarajan felt the need to locate herself in the world. Her love affair with scientific discovery and exploration started when she wrote the code to generate the monthly sky map over Delhi for a national newspaper.

Mapping the Heavens provides a tour of the greatest hits of cosmological discovery. The cosmos, once understood to be alone and small, filled with the ordinary, is now a universe that is expanding at an accelerating pace, structured by dark matter and propelled by dark energy. Cosmology, perhaps more essentially than other scientific disciplines, has not only changed our conception of the universe but also our place in it.

Natarajan, who is currently involved in one of the largest and most innovative mapping exercises of the universe ever undertaken—the Hubble Fields Initiative—traces the development of radical scientific ideas that have continually reshaped our cosmic map.

About the Author

Priyamvada Natarajan is professor of astronomy and physics at Yale University and holds the Sophie and Tycho Brahe Professorship at the Dark Center, Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. Her research on dark matter, dark energy, and black holes has won her many awards and honors, including Guggenheim and Radcliffe Fellowships. Invested in public dissemination of science and numerical literacy, she is a member of the advisory board of NOVA ScienceNow, participates regularly in the World Science Festival, and writes for The New York Review of Books. She was recently elected to chair the Division of Astrophysics of the American Physical Society.

A Thrilling But Totally Believable Murder Mystery

Read this in one evening. I had planned to do other things with my day, but it was impossible to put down. Every time I tried, I was drawn back to it in less than 5 minutes. I sobbed my eyes out the entire last 100 pages. Highly recommend!
