About the Book

Healthcare service delivery in emerging economies comes with great contradictions: that despite being fast growing economies, healthcare remains unaffordable to the large chunk of its population particularly for patients belonging to the bottom of the pyramid (BoP). Thus the modern healthcare systems are missing out on the "Uncaptured Potential" of the Emerging Markets. In order to offer affordable healthcare to its citizens the developing countries face many challenges. Primarily qualified manpower at different levels and their willingness to work in remote as well as smaller cities and towns. These countries also faces constraints with traditional government system, fast growing private sector and lack of financial support for its citizens. Many private players including hospitals and medical device companies are developing schemes for healthcare delivery in Emerging Markets. However, models developed for resource rich environment will be less applicable for countries like India and other emerging countries need to develop their own mixed models of care delivery and improve the same based on their experience. In this book, the reader gets a holistic operations perspective on developing tailored and affordable service delivery models for Emerging Economies. The Book is divided into 4 Sections, Section 1 gives details on the demand side in terms Indian Healthcare Economics, the economic burden of diseases and the challenges and opportunities existing in these emerging economies, Section 2 focuses on the supply side, by finding out technical efficiencies of healthcare delivery systems and exploring the reasons of inefficiency and poor scale up, while Section 3 focuses on developing sustainable and profitable innovations and healthcare ventures for emerging markets and Section 4 Shows the advent of telemedicine and Artificial intelligence and their use cases in emerging markets. Our Effort has been to put together analysis and findings what we obtained from set of rigorous research, surveys, literature reviews, expert interviews, mathematical modelling and statistical analysis. Also for better understanding and to back our hypothesis and models, we had included real world case studies at various points. The book also presents more than 20 Successful healthcare models from various emerging economies and tries to device a long term strategy in order to harness the untapped potential of healthcare delivery in Emerging Economies.
