About the Book

La devozione alla Madonna dei Miracoli di Mussomeli risale a mezzo millennio addietro.
L'otto settembre di quell'anno, in un declivio alle porte della medievale cittadina montana, un paralitico gridò al miracolo correndo sulle sue gambe dopo aver visto la Madonna in sogno.
Un frate domenicano, padre Giacinto Bellanca, priore del convento, nel suo "Manoscritto del XVIII secolo" così racconta quel giorno: "Correa l'anno del Signore 1540, nei confini del paese passò un povero paralitico inerte, senza moto per la stanchezza del giumento che lo portava, fu persuaso a riposare all'ombra di un sasso coperto di un roveto: ivi giacendo si addormentò.
Dopo breve risvegliatosi, si avvede sano e libero istantaneamente, si agita e cammina, alza gli occhi e vede nel sasso una figura di Maria Ss.ma e si manifesta nella popolazione il portentoso miracolo."
La gente del luogo accorse a quel grido e tra i rovi rinvenne una lastra di pietra con dipinta l'effige di Maria.
La pietra si conserva tutt'ora nella cripta del santuario.
Negli archivi ecclesiastici si conservavano dei documenti formali trascritti il 6 settembre 1596.
Davanti al vicario foraneo di Agrigento sfilarono quanti videro o sentirono narrare del miracolo del paralitico sanato. Tre le testimonianze de visu di chi vide il miracolo coi propri occhi, e dieci le testimonianze de relato, fatte mettere a verbale da chi aveva sentito raccontare da persone degne di fede quell'evento avvenuto circa sessant'anni prima.
II culto della Beddra Matri inizialmente attecchì nel popolino, tra la povera gente, ma neppure un secolo dopo, a seguito della miracolosa guarigione del principino Lorenzo Lanza di Trabia, la devozione per Maria ebbe vasto seguito anche i nobili e famiglie altolocate.
Una devozione di fede incontenibile, rinsaldata dall'arrivo dei Domenicani, tenacemente voluto da fra' Francesco, lo stesso che in gioventù, quando ancora si chiamava Giacinto Langela, s'era macchiato le mani di sangue innocente.
Pentitosi e vestito l'abito di San Domenico da Guzman, sarà fra' Francesco a edificare il convento dei frati domenicani e, negli ultimi anni di vita, a dare inizio ai lavori per costruire il magnifico santuario della Madonna dei Miracoli meta continua di pellegrinaggi.
Un culto cresciuto sempre di più nei secoli ai piedi di Maria, Patrona di Mussomeli, e che si rinnova anno dopo anno l'8 settembre con la sua festa
