Falsche Informationen, irrationale Entscheidungen, einflussreiche Akteure, all das gibt es dort nicht. Mit der Realität hat das allerdings weniger zu tun. Selbst das weltweite Finanzsystem mit seinen unzähligen Partizipanten ist weit davon entfernt, perfekt zu sein. Der beste Beweis dafür sind die Finanzkrisen. Sie sind der Ausdruck des Zusammenspiels zu vieler Unzulänglichkeiten, die es immer schon gab und wahrscheinlich immer geben wird, seien sie nun menschlicher, technischer oder institutioneller Natur. Die tatsächlichen Auslöser einer solchen Krise können dabei völlig unterschiedlich sein. Makroökonomische Missstände, politische Probleme oder einzelne Marktteilnehmer können den Anstoß geben, der das System der internationalen Finanzmärkte zum Kippen bringt. Die Traditionsbank Barings war ein solcher Fall, oder auch die Metallgesellschaft. Zu dieser Gruppe zählt ebenfalls LTCM. Beispielhaft und spektakulär zugleich war der Niedergang jenes Hedge Fonds, der an Größe, Ansehen, Komplexität und Risiko alles vorher Dagewesene in den Schatten gestellt hatte. Wie konnte es passieren, dass dieser Fonds, betrieben von den brillantesten Vertretern der Wall Street, innerhalb kürzester Zeit zu kollabieren drohte, und wie kam es, dass die Schieflage eines einzigen Fonds das gesamte Weltfinanzsystem erzittern ließ? Antworten auf diese und weitere Fragen soll die vorliegende Arbeit mit dem Thema "Die LTCM-Krise - Ursachen und Folgen" geben. Dazu wird in Abschnitt 2 die Geschichte des Hedge Fonds von der Gründung bis zum Beinahe-Zusammenbruch sowie dessen verfolgte Strategie beschrieben.
