Allen was an active churchgoer for ten years and has attended a wide range of Christian churches, from Pentecostal and Catholic to Southern Baptist and Lutheran. She explored nondenominational Hispanic and African American churches and took part in community outreach, Bible studies, and worship teams.
Increasingly, Allen found herself confronting aspects of Christianity she found objectionable, especially those centered on denying or condemning others. As her daughter grew and began to ask questions of her own, Allen realized she did not want to raise a child in an environment that, while often loving, was based on a foundation of discrimination and hate.
