About the Book

The aim of this book is the understanding and appreciation of sociology, and sociology of education. It is about the theory and practice of sociology, not a treatise in sociology. Thus, its perspective is broader, eclectic and more general than that of a textbook on sociology. It is intended to be an introduction to other literature of sociology. Because no one work could cover all the literature in this field, my intent was to select the theory and practice that is most relevant and useful in understanding and analyzing behaviour, action and activities in society. The selection also takes into account those practices, processes and problems that are commonly met by students in tertiary institutions, in particular, at the undergraduate, graduate and post graduate levels. It is hoped this audience finds in this book useful applicable methods of description and analysis of social and contemporary issues. It is specially designed as a sensitizing, teaching and learning vehicle. Thus, it is a source book on the many dimensions of sociology as a discipline. Social phenomena and reality, being of diverse nature, cannot be grasped except through a multi dimensional approach in which concepts and ideas prove useful at different stages of development. This is especially true of the contemporary world which is witnessing rapid and comprehensive processes of social transformation. I hope to convey a sense of the significance of sociology both as a human activity and as an intellectual discipline. It is also intended to introduce important concepts involved in the study of sociology. The book tries to establish the interrelations of sociology as a process with other social processes. There is great need today in the field of sociology, and sociology of education, for adequate, relevant and user friendly books whose conceptual tools can realistically and significantly describe concepts and processes which must provide the basis for effective observation and analysis. Included in the book are relevant topics on figures and statistics in sociology and education. There is a relevant section on information, technology and communication as they relate to sociological studies. All these are relevant and topical to the student, and reader. Included at the end is a comprehensive, instructing and elaborate glossary of terms used, and implied, in the book. The glossary, in itself, is intended to act as a quick reference teaching and learning unit. Technical or new terms in the book are also explained within the text. Possible questions for reflection are included towards the end of a chapter. The over all intention is to make this book, a one stop, one shop text for the student of sociology. In writing this book I owe debts of gratitude to many people and institutions. First, to the generations of my teachers who initiated me into the academic world. Secondly, there are the generations of students to whom I have taught courses on theory and applied sociology. They have therefore, been some form of guinea pigs for many of the ideas expressed in this book. Thirdly, there are many of my colleagues who have inspired me to immortalize my many years of teaching experiences into a book. It is tempting to name them, but that can create problems except if it is possible to name all. All the same I am indebted to all who have assisted in various ways in the preparation and publication of this book. In a special category stands my life partner, Laura MazilaNkata Tshambiwa waMashu, who has been my constant companion and a source of inspiration throughout my academic and professional odyssey.
