Der Oldenburger Designhistoriker Gert Selle hat einmal anlaalich einer Delmenhorster Ausstellungs-Eroffnung im Zusammenhang mit der EXPO 2000 davon gesprochen, dass auf dem uberaus zeitgemaaen okologischen Werkstoff Linoleum schon um 1900 "die Moderne tanzte". An anderer Stelle nannte Selle weiter, dass das "Beispiel Linoleum, von seinen Bestandteilen her ein Naturprodukt, ebenfalls flachendeckend, vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg der modernste Fuabodenbelag, den es gab", war. Vor allem zwischen 1900 und 1930 war Linoleum also ein total angesagter Werkstoff, der in Architektur und Design als vielfaltiger (ein)farbiger oder auch speziell gemusterter, kunstlerischer Bodenbelag verwendet wurde. Insbesondere als man ab 1900 das durchgemusterte, nicht abtretbare Inlaid-Linoleum - im Gegensatz zu dem bedruckten Linoleum - oft verwendete, obwohl die Herstellung sehr viel aufwandiger und damit auch teurer war, entwarfen eine ganze Reihe der zeitgenossischen Architekten, Designer und Raumplaner neue moderne florale oder grafische Dessins fur Linoleum: von Peter Behrens bis Henry van de Velde, von Josef Hoffmann bis Bruno Paul etc. Fur die "Raumkunst jener Zeit" war Linoleum demnach auch "ein Stoff, der den heutigen Anforderungen im Sinne der Hygiene und Raumkunst genugt. Wir besitzen in Linoleum eines der wenigen Produkte neuen Ursprungs, denen das Pradikat 'modern' wirklich zugedacht werden kann (...)." (H. M. Gubler). In der Nachkriegszeit stellte die neue DLW-Linoleum-Kollektion "Inlaid '57'" auf der groaen und wegweisenden Berliner Bauausstellung "Interbau 1957" die Zukunft der Moderne in Deutschland vor. Insgesamt bis zu 78 moderne Wohnungen wurden in den Musterhausern - u.a. von den beruhmten Architekten Alvar Aalto und Pierre Vago - im Hansa-Viertel in Berlin vorwiegend mit dem neuartigen und jetzt wieder zeitgemaaen Linoleum als Bodenbelag verwendet. Auch die internationalen Architekten Oscar Niemeyer und Le Corbusier haben in ihren Groabauten im Berliner Hansa-Viertel fast ausschliealich Linoleum als Fuabodenbelag benutzt. In den 1960er Jahren vor allem wurde Linoleum dann jedoch zunehmend als ein oft nicht mehr zeitgemaaer, muffiger Bodenbelag angesehen.Doch das zunehmende Bewusstsein seit den 1970er Jahren, dass die Ressourcen dieser Erde endlich sind, bescherte der verbleibenden Linoleum-Industrie insbesondere ab den 1980er Jahren eine wahrhafte Renaissance. Die Nachfrage nach Linoleum, dem Produkt aus vorwiegend naturlichen und nachwachsenden Rohstoffen, stieg wieder stark an. Linoleum wurde als ein okologisch korrekter, klimaneutraler und auch farbig sehr interessanter Bodenbelag in Architektur und Design quasi wiederentdeckt; denn alle Werkstoff-Bestandteile von Linoleum sind naturlich und fast vollstandig biologisch abbaubar. Durch seine Recyclingfahigkeit besitzt Linoleum also eine sehr gute Okobilanz und ist zugleich ein belastbarer, elastischer moderner Bodenbelag, der, wenn dieses Linoleum heute neu auf den Markt kame, es wieder gut und gerne vermutlich eine der wichtigsten Erfindungen des Jahrhunderts ware.
