On a emis sur ma Fortune des opinions peu fondees: les uns disent que je suis le plus heureux des hommes grace aux applaudissements que recueillent mes discours, et les autres que je suis le plus malheureux des etres par suite des risques et des travaux que j'assume continuellement. Aucun de ces deux jugements n'etant conforme a la verite, il me faut tenter de les rectifier par le recit des evenements passes et presents de ma vie, afin que chacun sache que les dieux ont pour moi mele les dons de la Fortune, et que je ne suis ni le plus heureux ni le plus malheureux. Puisse Nemesis ne point me punir de ses traits! Ces quelques lignes trahissent a elles seules l'ambition du livre et celle de son auteur, le sophiste Libanios (314-393), mais il est vrai que l'autobiographie est rarement un genre modeste. Le texte se divise en deux parties: la premiere, factuelle relate le parcours du sophiste depuis son enfance jusqu'a ses succes dans les plus hautes spheres de la societe d'Antioche, et la seconde, faite d'impressions personnelles. Volubile, exuberante, vaniteuse et facilement susceptible, la voix de Libanios a traverse les temps et forme un temoignage aussi riche que touchant. Le tome I des Discours est tout entier devolu a l'Autobiographie. L'introduction generale fait le point des connaissances relatives a l'auteur et croise les informations de l'Autobiographie avec les autres sources, notamment via les quelques 1500 lettres de Libanios qui nous sont parvenues. L'histoire de la tradition manuscrite est relatee en detail, tandis qu'une notice, assortie d'une chronologie, etudie avec precision la composition de l'oeuvre. Des notes, developpees en fin d'ouvrage par des notes complementaires, accompagnent la lecture. L'ouvrage est en outre enrichi d'un Index des noms propres.
