About the Book

Auf einem stillen Seitenplätzchen, nahe an der Stadtmauer, lebte die Witwe eines Seldwylers, der schon lange fertig geworden und unter dem Boden lag. Dieser war keiner von den schlimmsten gewesen, vielmehr fühlte er eine so starke Sehnsucht, ein ordentlicher und fester Mann zu sein, daß ihn der herrschende Ton, dem er als junger Mensch nicht entgehen konnte, angriff; und als seine Glanzzeit vorübergegangen und er der Sitte gemäß abtreten mußte von dem Schauplatz der Taten, da erschien ihm alles wie ein wüster Traum und wie ein Betrug um das Leben, und er bekam davon die Auszehrung und starb unverweilt. Er hinterließ seiner Witwe ein kleines baufälliges Häuschen, einen Kartoffelacker vor dem Tore und zwei Kinder, einen Sohn und eine Tochter. Mit dem Spinnrocken verdiente sie Milch und Butter, um die Kartoffeln zu kochen, die sie pflanzte, und ein kleiner Witwengehalt, den der Armenpfleger jährlich auszahlte, nachdem er ihn jedesmal einige Wochen über den Termin hinaus in seinem Geschäfte benutzt, reichte gerade zu dem Kleiderbedarf und einigen anderen kleinen Ausgaben hin. Dieses Geld wurde immer mit Schmerzen erwartet, indem die ärmlichen Gewänder der Kinder gerade um jene verlängerten Wochen zu früh gänzlich schadhaft waren und der Buttertopf überall seinen Grund durchblicken ließ. Dieses Durchblicken des grünen Topfbodens war eine so regelmäßige jährliche Erscheinung, wie irgendeine am Himmel, und verwandelte ebenso regelmäßig eine Zeitlang die kühle, kümmerlich- stille Zufriedenheit der Familie in eine wirkliche Unzufriedenheit. Die Kinder plagten die Mutter um besseres und reichlicheres Essen; denn sie hielten sie in ihrem Unverstande für mächtig genug dazu, weil sie ihr ein und alles, ihr einziger Schutz und ihre einzige Oberbehörde war. Die Mutter war unzufrieden, daß die Kinder nicht entweder mehr Verstand, oder mehr zu essen, oder beides zusammen erhielten.
