O la splendeur de notre joie et de nous-mêmes, En ce jardin où nous vivons de nos emblèmes. II Quoique nous le voyions fleurir devant nos yeux Ce jardin clair où nous passons silencieux, C'est plus encor en nous que se féconde Le plus candide et doux jardin du monde. Car nous vivons toutes les fleurs, Toutes les herbes, toutes les palmes En nos rires et en nos pleurs Le bonheur pur et calme. Car nous vivons toutes les transparences De l'étang bleu qui reflète l'exubérance Des roses d'or, et des grands lys vermeils, Bouches et lèvres de soleil. Oh! dis, c'est bien en nous que se féconde Le plus joyeux et doux jardin du monde...... ................. Émile Adolphe Gustave Verhaeren, né à Saint-Amand dans la province d'Anvers, Belgique, le 21 mai 1855 et mort à Rouen le 27 novembre 1916, est un poète belge flamand, d'expression française. Dans ses poèmes influencés par le symbolisme, où il pratique le vers libre, sa conscience sociale lui fait évoquer les grandes villes dont il parle avec lyrisme sur un ton d'une grande musicalité. Il a su traduire dans son oeuvre la beauté de l'effort humain. Biographie Verhaeren est né à Saint-Amand (en néerlandais: Sint-Amands) en Belgique, au bord de l'Escaut, dans une famille aisée où on parlait le français, tandis qu'au village et à l'école régnait le flamand. Il fréquenta d'abord l'internat francophone Sainte-Barbe, tenu par des jésuites à Gand, puis il étudia le droit dans la vieille université de Louvain. C'est là qu'il rencontra le cercle des écrivains qui animaient La Jeune Belgique et il publia en 1879 les premiers articles de son cru dans des revues d'étudiants. Chaque semaine, l'écrivain socialiste Edmond Picard tenait à Bruxelles un salon où le jeune Verhaeren put rencontrer des écrivains et des artistes d'avant-garde. C'est alors qu'il décida de renoncer à une carrière juridique et de devenir écrivain. Il publiait des poèmes et des articles critiques dans les revues belges et étrangères, entre autres L'Art moderne et La Jeune Belgique. Comme critique d'art, il soutint de jeunes artistes tels que James Ensor.
