Appliquant les lois de la rhetorique biblico-semitique, les Actes des apotres se sont reveles organises, comme beaucoup d'autres textes bibliques, de maniere concentrique. Deux sections de grande ampleur (A: 1,1-14,28 et C: 15,36-28,31) encadrent une section beaucoup plus courte, intitulee traditionnellement Le concile de Jerusalem (B: 15,1-35). Les sections extremes comptent chacune neuf sequences, organisees elles aussi de maniere concentrique: chacune est focalisee sur sa cinquieme sequence qui joue le role de pivot, de tournant de la section. Il s'agit du temoignage extreme d'Etienne (A5: 6,1-8,1a), puis de celui de Paul qui n'echappe a la mort que pour etre conduit a l'abattoir du tribunal de Cesar (C5: 21,1-23,35). Au centre de l'oeuvre, le concile de Jerusalem constitue la ligne de partage des eaux. C'est a ce moment-la qu'est discute et resolu le probleme majeur qui s'etait pose peu a peu durant la premiere section: a quelles conditions les paiens pouvaient-ils etre accueillis et integres dans la communaute des disciples de Jesus ? Devaient-ils devenir juifs, soumis a la Loi de Moise, a commencer par la circoncision, ou pouvaient-ils rester ce qu'ils etaient ? Si les paiens n'integraient pas, a part entiere, la communaute des fils d'Israel, les Juifs devenus eux aussi disciples de Jesus pouvaient-ils frayer avec eux, partager leurs repas sans devenir impurs, comme eux, selon la Loi ? L'unite devait-elle se faire par pure assimilation ou pouvait-elle supporter la difference ? La decision prise par l'assemblee ne fit qu'enteriner celle que Dieu lui-meme avait manifestee en faisant descendre son Esprit sur les paiens reunis dans la maison du centurion romain Corneille, comme il l'avait fait sur les seuls Juifs le jour de la Pentecote, surprenant grandement les Juifs temoins de la scene. A partir du concile, la mission put reprendre avec serenite aupres des Juifs et des paiens devenus disciples de Jesus, ne formant qu'une seule et meme Eglise. Le nous des chretiens est pluriel et il l'est reste jusqu'aujourd'hui. Le recit des Actes - avec ses fameux passages en nous - invite le lecteur actuel a entrer dans le nous de la fraternite qui surmonte et vainc la jalousie.
