Geleitwort Im Zuge der gesellschaftlichen Aufwertung und Institutionalisierung des lebe- langen Lernens wird die Frage der Weiterbildungsbeteiligung breiter Bevöl- rungsschichten zu einem auch bildungspolitisch relevanten Steuerungsgeg- stand. In diesem Kontext gewinnt Bildungsmonitoring als die systematische - obachtung und Bewertung von Zuständen und Entwicklungen des Bildungss- tems auf der Grundlage entsprechender empirischer Erhebungen eine zunehm- de Bedeutung. Die Datengrundlage für ein weiterbildungsbezogenes Bildun- monitoring ist allerdings als höchst disparat zu bezeichnen, da sich die vorl- genden Studien in ihrem methodischen Design, in ihrer Operationalisierung von Weiterbildungsbeteiligung und auch in ihren Ergebnissen über Teilnahmequoten z. T. erheblich unterscheiden. Genau an dieser Stelle setzt die Arbeit von Sarah Widany ein, die "Erk- rungsfaktoren für die unterschiedlichen Ergebnisse anhand der Spezifika der v- schiedenen Studien" aufzeigen und somit auf die Interpretationsbedürftigkeit von Zahlen über Weiterbildungsbeteiligung im Kontext von Bildungsmonitoring hinweisen möchte. Die Arbeit beginnt mit einem allgemeinen Überblick über Aufgabe und Funktion von Bildungsmonitoring gerade auch mit Blick auf die internationale Diskussionslage. Sie gibt dann einen systematisierten Einblick in vier zentrale Studien sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung, die - wie etwa der Mikrozensus, das Sozio-Oekonomische Panel oder das Berichtssystem Weit- bildung - (regelmäßig) Daten (auch) über Weiterbildungsbeteiligung liefern. Des Weiteren unternimmt sie einen Vergleich der Stichproben des Sozio- Oekonomischen Panels (2000) und des Berichtssystems Weiterbildung (2000), um anhand sozio-demographischer Merkmale Gemeinsamkeiten und Unt- schiede beider Studien deutlicher zu profilieren. Und schließlich werden die Konsequenzen der Ergebnisse mit Blick auf eine Verstetigung und Kontextua- sierung empirischer Weiterbildungsbeteiligungsforschung diskutiert.
