About the Book

This cutting-edge series, The Dark Side of the Da Vinci Legacy exposes the great polymath Leonardo da Vinci as nothing more than urban legend, a myth that began in Renaissance Italy and endured for five centuries.

In book one Leonardo: the making and breaking of a myth, international writer Susan Grundy establishes the boundaries of how this Tuscan painter's simple artistic biography was recast, so that now he is celebrated as the Western world's greatest ever intellectual giant. She demonstrates how Leonardo's enhanced biography is based on his assumed authorship of a collection of scientific papers and drawings of around 7,000 pages now gathered into Notebooks. These were only first widely transcribed in the late nineteenth century, long after Leonardo passed away in France in 1519.
At this moment scholars encountered a man who had travelled in the Middle East, serving Sultans in a military capacity. Early biographies of Leonardo had mentioned none of this, and horrified Europhiles closed the debate down - it was the author's fiction, they said.

But then another shock came in the 1950s, after Joseph Needham began publishing the monumental Science and Civilization in China . It became clear any number of technological achievements in the Notebooks were already in use or thought of in Ancient China.

Modern biographers of Leonardo have not been able to overcome the East. Yet references are found everywhere throughout the Notebooks, and even in certain artworks attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. The problem is widely dealt with by simply ignoring it.
It was only at the turn of the twenty-first century a number of researchers came up with theories Leonardo's mother must have been an Eastern slave - Chinese, Turkish, Arabic, or even Jewish - to try to explain this pervasive Orientalism in the Notebooks.

These ethnicity theories rattled the foundations of a Western construct of the supposed great Italian polymath genius, and initiated a process that would dislodge Leonardo da Vinci from his perch. More significantly, the recovery of the real note-maker begins here, an Eastern man Zoroastro whose identity has been absorbed into the reconstructed account of the life of Leonardo da Vinci.
