About the Book

This is a story about turning dreams into reality. Told from the perspective of the founding principal, it is the story of how a small group of dedicated educators and parents created a school from nothing but dreams and hard work; a school that would be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as one of the top eight charter schools in the nation just five years after its doors opened. This is a story of commitment, passion, and persistence-a real labor of love-that continues to enrich the lives of young people, teachers, and parents who have had the good fortune to be a part of it.
About the Author: After teaching for 21 years, "Principal Powers" helped open the School of Arts and Sciences in 1999 as the founding principal. In just five years, the school was named one of the top eight charter schools in the nation for innovation and accountability by the US Department of Education. A short time later, it was named a model school among all types of schools in the nation by the International Center for Leadership in Education. While principal, Debo served on the National Task Force for Charter School Quality and Accountability, the Florida Charter School Review Panel, the Florida Charter School Appeals Commission, and the Advocacy Committee for the Florida Consortium of Charter Schools. Numerous times, she has spoken to education committees in the Florida Legislature. She served as principal for thirteen years before retiring. She continues to lead the half-day principal's networking session at the annual Florida Charter School Conference and to serve on the Charter School Appeals Commission when she is needed. She writes a monthly blog for charter school principals called "Leading the Dream." Not only is Debo a charter school leader, but she is a dance competitor and instructor, a regional leader in Re-evaluation Counseling, certified camellia show judge, and an environmental activist. She built a solar-powered cabin in the Montana wilderness next to Glacier National Park where she lives off-the-grid and loves to hike, backpack, kayak, mountain bike, and garden. She took her ideas about working collaboratively into her Montana community and served as President of the North Fork Landowners Association with a focus on community building. She also served on the Whitefish Range Partnership, a collaborative effort that brought together loggers, snowmobilers, mountain bikers, backcountry horsemen, hikers, hunters, anglers, and wilderness advocates to reach consensus on a recommendation for land management in the Flathead National Forest in Montana. She currently serves on the board of several environmental organizations in Montana and donates her time as a volunteer fire lookout during fire season. In her retirement, she splits her time between Montana and Florida.
