About the Book

Christine lives in a small windswept prairie city where time moves slowly. One morning, in the middle of a hot, dry summer, she makes the acquaintance of an elderly neighbour who only lives a few streets over from her. The two become close friends and before you know it, the old man and the little girl hatch a plan together, a visit by train to a great inland ocean called Lake Winnipeg, which the little girl has never seen, and the old man yearns for. An endearing story in French about friendship that conveys the passage of time and the mystery of change. The illustrated picture book is accompanied by recordings of the narrated story and 13 songs. A unique code for the digital download of the recordings and a printable file of the illustrated story is also included.
About the Author: Gabrielle Roy (1909-1983) was a Canadian author from St. Boniface, Manitoba and one of the major figures in French Canadian literature. She was the first Canadian to win France's Prix Femina for her novel Bonheur d'occasion. Over the course of her lengthy and prolific career, Gabrielle Roy received many honours, including three Governor General's Awards, the Companion of the Order of Canada, the Medal of the Canada Council, the Prix David, and the Prix Molson. Dominique Fortier is a Canadian novelist and translator from Quebec who has won several literary awards including the prestigious Prix Renaudot in France and the Governor General's Award in Canada. She is also a three-time nominee for the Governor General's Award for English to French translation for the novels Spoken Here: Travels Among Threatened Languages by Mark Abley, Tree: A Life Story by David Suzuki and Wayne Grady, and The Prophet's Camel Bell by Margaret Laurence. Rogé earned his degree in graphic design at Université Laval in Quebec City, and worked in advertizing for several years before pursuing his passion, focusing on illustrating, painting, and writing. Now his illustrations are published in over twenty children's books, many of which he has won awards for, including the Governor General of Canada award in 2006, and the New York Times award in 2014. His recent publications include Mingan my village and Haiti my country--both collections of poems from children in third-world countries. Daniel Lavoie has created some memorable songs throughout the francophonie, such as "Ils s'aiment" and "Jours de plaines." He is also known for his participation in the highly popular international production of the musical Notre-Dame de Paris.
