Extrait LA VENGEANCE DE PARDAILLAN LE RÉVEILLON Ils étaient quatre qui ne voulaient pas se battre, - bien qu'à certains jours ils en eussent de furieuses envies, - mais qui désiraient ardemment Rinalba, la fantasque ballerine: Pardaillan, un peu avare; Grangeneuve, un peu toqué; Fontenoye, un peu bruyant, et Chambreuil, un peu fatigué; mais tous quatre très élégants, très jolis garçons et très riches... ce qui n'a jamais rien gâté. Assis côte à côte dans les fauteuils réservés au cercle des Truffes, ils ne manquaient jamais une représentation du ballet où la danseuse, dans le pas de la toque, faisait courir tout Paris, accompagnant du bruit des castagnettes les déhanchements de son corps flexible. Il y avait surtout un certain moment!... Son buste cambré se renversait en des poses adorables, avec des yeux pâmés et des lèvres entrouvertes par un sourire bizarre, - et la salle entière était emportée dans un rêve aphrodisiaque, un pays féerique traversé de gazes, de tutus et de maillots roses. À ce petit jeu-là, nos clubmen devenaient littéralement fous. Ils étaient reçus non seulement dans la loge de l'artiste, où ils se grisaient de la lourde odeur des fards, du parfum des jupes dans une flambée crue du gaz, mais aux petits cinq heures, à celle audience quotidienne où, dans son hôtel de la rue Fortuny, la Rinalba, étendue sur une peau de tigre, daignait donner la réplique à des députés, à des sénateurs, à des ministres, à des ambassadeurs, et même à un maréchal de France.
About the Author: Richard de L'Isle de Falcon de Saint-Geniès, dit Richard O'Monroy, né en 1849 à Paris où il est mort en 1916, est un romancier et nouvelliste français. Avec Gyp et Ludovic Halévy, il est l'un des conteurs de la vie parisienne dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle. Sorti de l'école de Saint-Cyr en 1870, il est capitaine de cavalerie lorsqu'il est acculé à la démission en 1891, ce qui lui permet de se consacrer pleinement à l'écriture. Il contribue à La Vie parisienne et au Gil Blas des saynètes de la vie d'officier, des croquis parisiens, des romans et des nouvelles réunis par la suite en une cinquantaine de volumes. Il est également l'auteur de quelques vaudevilles et comédies en un acte. Son style d'allure vive et sa gaieté sentimentale ont su plaire pendant un temps à un certain public
