EXTRAIT: C'était par une belle journée de juin 455; le combat qui venait d'opposer, au Circus Maximus de Rome, deux gigantesques Hérules à une meute de sangliers hyrcaniens s'était terminé dans le sang, lorsque vers la troisième heure de l'après-midi une agitation croissante commença à s'emparer des milliers de spectateurs. Tous les voisins de la loge richement décorée de tapis et de statues, où l'empereur Maxime était assis au milieu des officiers du palais, avaient été surpris d'y voir entrer un messager couvert de poussière et qui venait apparemment de mettre pied à terre après une furieuse galopade. À peine eut-il transmis ses nouvelles au monarque que, contre tous les usages, celui-ci se leva au moment le plus pathétique du jeu; toute la cour le suivit avec la même hâte insolite, et bientôt les sièges réservés aux sénateurs et aux autres dignitaires se vidèrent à leur tour. Un départ aussi précipité ne pouvait pas se produire sans raison grave. En vain d'éclatantes fanfares annoncèrent-elles un nouveau combat de bêtes et un lion numide à crinière noire s'élança-t-il par la grille ouverte avec un sourd rugissement au-devant du glaive court des gladiateurs - une vague d'inquiétude surgissant dans l'écume blême des visages soucieux et interrogateurs, souleva irrésistiblement l'assistance anxieuse et y déferla en tous sens. On se levait, on se montrait les places vides des notables, on se questionnait, on faisait du tapage, on sifflait; puis une nouvelle bouleversante, venue on ne sait d'où, se répandit soudain parmi les spectateurs: les Vandales, ces pirates redoutés de la Méditerranée, avaient débarqué à Portus avec une flotte considérable et marchaient déjà sur la ville insouciante. Les Vandales ! Ce mot d'abord chuchoté devint tout à coup une clameur retentissante poussée par des centaines et des milliers de poitrines, et parcourut les gradins de pierre du cirque: Les Barbares ! Les Barbares ! Déjà la multitude, comme emportée par une bourrasque, se ruait vers la sortie. Ce fut la panique. Les gardes quittèrent leur poste et fuirent avec tout le monde; on sautait par-dessus les sièges; on se frayait un chemin à coups de poing et d'épée, on piétinait les femmes et les enfants qui poussaient des cris aigus. Devant les issues, se produisaient des remous d'où partaient des hurlements et des plaintes. En un instant le vaste ovale de marbre, où la minute d'avant quatre-vingt mille personnes formaient un bloc sombre et bruyant, fut complètement évacué. Silencieuses et désertes sous le soleil ardent, les arènes ressemblaient maintenant à une carrière abandonnée. Seul sur la piste - car les combattants avaient fui aussitôt avec les autres - le lion oublié, secouant sa crinière noire, rugissait d'un air de défi au milieu de cette solitude imprévue.
