About the Book

Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot, im weiteren Verlauf der Studie kurz Carnot genannt, wurde am Sonntag, den 13 Mai 1753, in Nolay, einem kleinen burgundischen Verwaltungsflecken, geboren und starb im Exil in Magdeburg am 02. August 1823, von wo seine sterblichen Überreste am 02. August 1889 in das Pantheon unter dessen Frontispiz "Aux Grands Hommes La Patrie Reconnaissante" überführt wurden und gehört damit zu den französischen "Unsterblichen". Aus seinen drei Hauptwirkungskreisen als Soldat, Wissenschaft-ler und Politiker lassen sich zahlreiche, zum Teil divergierende, aber oft gleichzeitig ablaufende Persönlichkeitsbilder entwickeln wie bürgerlicher Ingenieuroffizier bis zum Grad eines Hauptmanns, Revolutionär und stets republikanischer Patriot, Festungsbautheoretiker, Moralist, Deputierter der Nationalversammlung, Emissär ("Commissaire aux Armées") zu verschiedenen Armeen mit prokonsularischer Gewalt, Gründer und auch Mitglied unterschiedlicher "Comités", Erarbeiter eines Verfassungsentwurfs, Führer im Gefecht und "l´Organisateur de la Victoire", Mitglied der Akademien von Dijon und Arras, Enzyklopädist, Angehöriger des Konvents und als "Citoyen Stratège" auch des Wohlfahrtsausschusses während des "Terreur", Begründer der "levée en masse" und militärtechnischer Innovator, "Régicide", Mitglied des Direktoriums, zweimaliger Exilant, Kriegsminister Napoleons und doch als Tribun gegen dessen lebenslanges Direktorium und die Kaiserkrönung votierend, Divisionsgeneral und Verteidiger von Antwerpen, Graf, Pair und Innenminister während der "100 Tage", publizierender Wissenschaftler in Geometrie, Ther-modynamik und Mechanik, aber auch in Philosophie und Militärtechnik, Mitglied des "Institut de France" und aus diesem zwei Mal gestrichen, Reformer im Erziehungswesen und Mitbegründer der "École Polytechnique", der "École Normale" und anderer Schulen, sowie Verfasser zahlreicher leichter, anakreontischer aber auch moralischer Gedichte und schließlich liebevoller Familienmen
