Résumé Si les toiles du célèbre Félix Valloton (1865-1925) frappent par leurs couleurs profondes, son roman La vie meurtrière, rédigé entre 1907 et 1908 et publié de manière posthume en 1927, est imprégné d'une inquiétante noirceur. Jacques Verdier, artiste de vingt-huit ans, s'est suicidé à son domicile. Il a laissé à l'attention du commissaire qui constatera les faits une courte lettre et un pli. Dans ce pli, un manuscrit au titre intrigant, Un amour, déroule de façon implacable le récit d'une vie funeste... Bien malgré lui, le défunt semble avoir provoqué depuis sa plus tendre enfance d'épouvantables accidents mortels. Crises cardiaques, chutes, empoissonnements, brûlures se sont multipliés autour de lui jusqu'à ce que la question lancinante de sa propre responsabilité l'accule à envisager une solution radicale. Jacques portait-il en lui, comme il le croyait un " fatal pouvoir ", un " principe de mort " ?
About the Author: Biographie: Félix Vallotton, né à Lausanne le 28 décembre 1865 et mort à Paris le 29 décembre 1925, est un artiste peintre, sculpteur et graveur sur bois suisse. Comme écrivain, il s'illustra avec des pièces de théâtre et des romans à la tonalité pessimiste. À l'âge de 17 ans, Félix Vallotton entre à l'Académie Julian, dont les ateliers sont fréquentés par de nombreux artistes post-impressionnistes ainsi que par les Nabis1. En moins de dix ans, le jeune Suisse parvient à se faire un nom auprès de l'avant-garde parisienne. Sa renommée devient internationale grâce à ses gravures sur bois et à ses illustrations en noir et blanc qui font sensation. Il participe régulièrement à différents Salons (Salon des artistes français, Salon des indépendants, Salon d'automne). À partir de 1899, il se consacre essentiellement à la peinture. Il expose régulièrement à Paris, notamment en janvier 1910, lors d'une exposition dont le catalogue est préfacé par Octave Mirbeau. Il expose aussi en Suisse et dans d'autres pays. Illustrateur apprécié à ses débuts, il renouvelle l'art de la xylographie. Ses Intimités lui valent une reconnaissance internationale que renforce encore son appartenance au groupe des nabis. Il épouse en secondes noces Gabrielle Rodrigues-Henriques, filles et soeur des Bernheim jeune, marchands d'arts parisiens réputés. Il peint des scènes d'intérieur puis se consacre à des thèmes classiques, paysages et nus, qu'il traduit d'une manière personnelle, hors des modes du temps. Il parvient néanmoins à s'imposer bénéficiant de l'aide efficace de son frère Paul qui dirige à Lausanne la succursale de la galerie Bernheim jeune. Vallotton était un travailleur dévoué, sans cesse à la recherche de nouvelles formes d'expression. Touché par l'horreur de la Première Guerre mondiale, il trouva dans le conflit une source d'inspiration qui le poussa vers l'art abstrait. Il renoua avec le succès vers la fin de la guerre, avant de mourir en 1925.
