Ces notions sur le passé de notre planète, ces craintes pour l'avenir de l'homme suffiraient pour nous engager à observer avec soin, au moyen des instruments que nous procure la physique, l'état actuel de la terre, la constitution de son atmosphère, tous les phénomènes généraux que les agents physiques y développent perpétuellement, et qui constituent pour ainsi dire la vie minérale du globe. Un autre mobile cependant, d'un intérêt plus pressant et plus direct, nous invite à cette étude, et en dehors des lumières qu'elle peut jeter sur le passé ou l'avenir du monde où nous vivons, il est des enseignements d'ordre pratique et d'application immédiate qu'on peut lui demander. Indiquer par quels procédés on obtient ces enseignements, montrer ensuite par quelques exemples le parti qu'on en peut tirer, ce sera développer le but de la météorologie, dont se révéleront ainsi avec une égale netteté la valeur scientifique d'abord, puis l'utilité journalière...
About the Author: Jules Célestin Jamin, né le 31 mai 1818 à Termes et mort le 12 février 1886 à Paris, est un physicien français, professeur durant 29 ans à l'École polytechnique et durant 23 ans à la faculté des sciences de Paris.
