Si La veleta de Gastizar o Los caudillos de 1830 nos ponen ante un tipo de empresa romantica que se dio tambien en Italia y otros paises, destinada a obtener la libertad frente al absolutismo, de un modo que parece muy poco eficaz, pero admirable en suma, La Isabelina nos coloca en un ambito estrechamente relacionado con intentonas y expediciones semejantes: el de las sociedades secretas de caracter politico. Se trata, en el caso, de una creada por Aviraneta con el designio de defender los derechos de la hija de Fernando VII frente a los carlistas, defensores de la ley salica. La accion se desarrolla en Madrid, en torno a la fecha de la muerte del rey, en un ambiente de intrigas politicas, cortesanas y sentimentales. Da asi ocasion para que el novelista haga desfilar una cantidad considerable de tipos curiosos, desde el Padre Chamizo al comadron teosofo. Tambien para que de breves pinceladas sobre el Madrid de 1833, dibuje sitios de su predileccion, como las librerias de viejo, y muestre su aversion cierto tipo de politico, ideologo o grandilocuente, pero poco eficaz, que se ha dado mucho en el pais. Baroja utilizo para escribir esta novela muchas fuentes documentales; pero entre ellas algunas muy directas de mano del mismo Aviraneta, que fue entonces cuando comenzo a adquirir una fama, bastante cargada de divergencias, como conspirador. Puede decirse que hasta entonces y desde 1820, habia sido mas bien un militar aventurero; en los ultimos momentos de la guerra civil llego al mayor virtuosismo en el arte de conspirar y aun en 1854 la fama de conspirador y la de ser amigo de Maria Cristina le persiguio. Tanto en 1834 como en 1854 dio con sus huesos en la carcel. Habra que observar desde esta novela en adelante la gran diferencia que hay entre la forma de interpretar los hechos historicos de Baroja con respecto a Galdos. Tambien una radical oposicion a la manera de tratarlos de Valle-Inclan. Galdos queda en la tradicion progresista y republicana. Valle-Inclan hace alardes de carlismo romantico. Baroja va por otro camino mas dificil de seguir.
