Je vais essayer là-bas je ne sais quel commerce de vente de boeufs et de chevaux avec les quelques billets de mille francs - une dizaine pas plus - qui restent des six millions laissés par papa Boujard. Ah! ça a vite filé. - Mais, objecta Berthecourt, expliquez-nous un peu ce coup de folie. Sylvia est agréable sans doute... cependant, saperlipopette, six millions, c'est une somme. - Ah! mes amis, c'est que vous ne connaissez pas la puissance de l'amour-propre, de la vanité chatouillée au bon endroit. Je pourrais commencer mon histoire par la phrase classique: Né d'une naissance obscure, et ces quatre mots seraient l'explication de tout mon roman. - Explique-toi. - Oh! c'est bien simple. Vous autres vous avez eu la chance de naître avec un nom, un titre, ou tout au moins une excellente position sociale. Moi, j'étais simplement Boujard, Isidore Boujard, fils et successeur de François Boujard, inventeur du sommier automatique - une invention merveilleuse qui avait permis au papa de me laisser une fortune considérable. Aussi, dès que j'atteignis vingt et un ans, je n'eus rien de plus pressé que de vendre la boîte à papa, ce qui était une grosse faute, de réaliser mon avoir, et de me lancer dans ce qui s'appelle la grande vie. Que voulez-vous? À cet âge-là, tout le monde ne peut pas se faire fourrer à la Conciergerie.
About the Author: Richard de L'Isle de Falcon de Saint-Geniès, dit Richard O'Monroy, né en 1849 à Paris où il est mort en 1916, est un romancier et nouvelliste français. Avec Gyp et Ludovic Halévy, il est l'un des conteurs de la vie parisienne dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle. Sorti de l'école de Saint-Cyr en 1870, il est capitaine de cavalerie lorsqu'il est acculé à la démission en 1891, ce qui lui permet de se consacrer pleinement à l'écriture. Il contribue à La Vie parisienne et au Gil Blas des saynètes de la vie d'officier, des croquis parisiens, des romans et des nouvelles réunis par la suite en une cinquantaine de volumes. Il est également l'auteur de quelques vaudevilles et comédies en un acte. Son style d'allure vive et sa gaieté sentimentale ont su plaire pendant un temps à un certain public
