Il est des hommes, exclus du grand recit historique officiel, des vies apparemment ordinaires qui toutefois temoignent autant des soubresauts d'un siecle que les biographies arrangees des grands personnages. Georges Valero (1937-1990) en apporte une preuve exceptionnelle. D'abord, son existence se tisse dans la trame politique de la deuxieme moitie du XXe siecle. Ne au temps du Front populaire, Georges Valero grandit dans un des quartiers les plus desherites de l'agglomeration lyonnaise. Son militantisme syndical le conduit, au retour de la guerre d'Algerie, a choisir de travailler de nuit dans un centre de tri postal lorsque nombre de militants deviendront permanents. Il est de toutes les luttes de la gauche revolutionnaire: l'anticolonialisme, le communisme, Mai 1968, le syndicalisme autogestionnaire, l'anarchie. Mais cet engagement dans le siecle prend, pour l'historien, valeur de temoignage et d'analyses hors du commun du fait de la part prise, par l'ecriture romanesque, dans l'existence de ce fils d'ouvriers immigres. Tres tot, Valero, qui ecrit dans des journaux lyceens, decouvre la necessite de mettre a distance le cours immediat des evenements par la litterature: soldat en Algerie, il se lance clandestinement dans la redaction d'un roman antimilitariste. Toute son oeuvre, impregnee de cet engagement dans la cite, se revele pour l'histoire sociale et culturelle, une mine sans equivalent, puisqu'elle offre une plongee dans un univers populaire ou l'on peine a parler de soi a la premiere personne. Au-dela de la figure de l'ecrivain-travailleur, Christian Chevandier restitue l'histoire d'une generation et d'un milieu, pour lesquels la culture etait synonyme d'emancipation. Une generation parmi d'autres, qui se distingue cependant par ce que la vie de Georges Valero nous revele de la societe contemporaine.
