Le premier livre d'Andre Leroi-Gourhan, publie en 1936, meritait bien une seconde edition. La Civilisation du renne, dediee a Marcel Mauss, est certes un livre de jeunesse, comme le pointe Lucien Febvre, mais c'est aussi un livre-promesse, un livre-jalon, car l'ambition extreme de l'auteur, alors age de 25 ans, le pousse a multiplier les incursions dans un nombre considerable de disciplines (geographie, ethnologie, technologie, prehistoire, orientalisme) qu'il entend coordonner afin d'etudier, en depit de l'eloignement temporel et du deplacement des milieux climatiques, trois epoques d'une meme culture du renne en milieu arctique (toundra-taiga): dans l'Europe du Pleistocene, chez les Eskimos actuels, chez les peuples qui ont domestique l'animal. Le livre est impressionnant par une masse de faits et d'idees a mediter, et de perspectives singulierement larges sur le plus lointain passe de l'humanite (Febvre encore). Il annonce tant les maitres-livres de l'auteur sur la technologie, que son livre illustre sur la Prehistoire de l'art occidental (1965) ou encore son chef d'uvre qui sut toucher un large public cultive au-dela des specialistes, Le Geste et la parole, dans lequel l'auteur interroge l'avenir de l'homme en prenant appui sur son passe a l'echelle paleontologique.
About the Author: Contributor Biography - French Andre Leroi-Gourhan (1911-1986), ethnologue, prehistorien, professeur successivement a Lyon, a la Sorbonne et au College de France, a ete, apres l'abbe Breuil, la principale reference francaise dans les recherches prehistoriques (il a dirige notamment les fouilles d'Arcy-sur-Cure et de Pincevent). Par ses ouvrages sur l'art prehistorique et la technologie, il a influence plusieurs generations de philosophes et de chercheurs en anthropologie. Michel Guerin is a writer and philosopher who has written some twenty works since his first book, Nietzsche, Socrate heroique (Grasset, 1975). Until 2009, he headed the LESA (Laboratoire d'Etudes en Sciences des Arts) at Universite de Provence. He is a university professor and a member of the Institut universitaire de France (2005-2010) and is teaching aesthetics in Aix-en-Provence.
