About the Book

Este "cuento metafísico de aguas y cielos y rayos azules," como lo define su autor, es tam-bién un cuento de amor y de mayas. Sobre todo de mayas. Sus mitos, sus leyendas, sus cos-tumbres y su forma de entender la vida están presentes en él. La acción transcurre en nues-tros días y por tanto sus personajes son actuales y ancestrales al mismo tiempo. Chacs, el lacandón, es el chilán (profeta) de la cisterna, pero trabaja en el yate de Cohen como piloto. Ku y Ethel, el multimillonario mejicano con sangre maya y la bella inglesa de Puerto Belize (¿Kukulcán e Itchel?), fueron al Sahara hace muchos años en busca de los orígenes y volverán a ir, según está programado en el túnel del tiempo. Ignacio de Córdoba, de origen español, es un Grijalba (hombre grande barbado en el que personifican los mayas a los conquistadores españoles) sin grandeza. De esta obra poética y filosófica dice Sender, con su peculiar sentido del humor: "La cisterna de Chichén-Itzá es la novela menos mala de todas las que he escrito."
About the Author: Ramón J. Sender nació el 3 de febrero de 1901 en Chalamera del Cinca (Huesca), formando parte de una familia numerosa. Escribió su primera novela, Imán, en 1930. En 1935 ganó el Premio Nacional de Lite-ratura con Mr. Witt en el Cantón. En 1939 marchó a Francia desde donde pasó a Mé-xico para establecerse, por último, en los Estados Unidos. Allí ha explicado durante años Literatura Española como titular de esta cátedra en la University of Southern de California. Vivía en San Diego. Su producción literaria es muy extensa y abarca los temas más diversos. Valga de ejemplo La tesis de Nancy en contraste con sus obras sobre la guerra civil españo-la, Crónica del alba, Los cinco libros de Ariadna, Réquiem por un campesino espa-ñol ..., o la casi terrorífica las criaturas saturnianas. Siendo indiscutiblemente uno de los escri-tores más importantes de la lengua espa-ñola, con una definitiva influencia en la narrativa actual y que ha obtenido el título de doctor honoris causa en varias univer-sidades extranjeras, no era miembro de la Real Academia de la Lengua Española. H. G. Wells dice en su Historia Universal que para entender a España hay que leer a Sender. Quizá por eso sea el autor español más traducido. Una editorial inglesa publi-có La luna y los perros en traducción de Robert Graves y en los Es-tados Unidos se publicó la edi-ción en inglés de La cisterna de Chichén -ltzá.
