Kulturtourismus beschreibt nicht nur die älteste, eine sehr komplexe, vielschichtige und mit verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen und touristischen Bereichen verflochtene Tourismusform, insbesondere die Entwicklung dieses Marktes in der Praxis und speziell das Zusammentreffen mit dem Erlebnismarkt lassen kaum mehr eine isolierte Betrachtung dieser touristischen Erscheinungsform zu. Den massentouristischen Entwicklungen folgt eine Kommerzialisierung von Kultur, welche die Differenzierungsmerkmale eines einzigartigen Phänomens zunehmend verringert und damit nicht nur den Wettbewerb in diesem Markt zunehmend verschärft, sondern ebenso die kulturelle Identität von Kulturräumen wie auch die Substanz des kulturellen Erbes gefährdet. Für die Marktakteure ergeben sich daraus eine Reihe eng miteinander verflochtener Spannungsfelder: Zwischen Kultur und Kommerz, Bildungsauftrag und Markterfolg, Authentizität und Inszenierung, Kern- und Zusatzleistung sowie zwischen Standardisierung und Originalität. Die vorliegende Studie versucht, einen nachfrageorientierten Mittelweg zu eruieren, um kulturtouristisches Geschäft und Nachhaltigkeit intelligent zu verbinden und die existierenden Spannungsfelder marktgerecht aufzulösen.
