About the Book

Geschrieben im Winter 1946/47, im Alter von 20 Jahren - wiedererhalten an meinem 88. Geburtstag, dem 4. April 2014: Bei der Abschrift sah ich all diese Dinge wieder vor mir. Es ist immer noch aktuell. Haben wir Menschen aus der Erfahrung des Krieges nichts oder wenig gelernt? Es scheint fast so. "Sie fragen genauso wie viele tausend andere: Warum ist das geschehen? Wohin führt jetzt unser Weg? Bevor wir aber wieder vorwärtsgehen, wollen wir erst einmal uns von Grund auf reinigen, wollen den Acker - wie der Bauer es tut - zur neuen Saat bereiten. Wir sind ein Volk, das am Boden liegt, ein Volk, das militärisch zerschlagen, wirtschaftlich vernichtet und politisch zerfallen ist. Alles, was aus der Vergangenheit geblieben ist, ist ein Chaos. Millionen von Menschen stehen vor den Trümmern ihrer Welt, stehen aber auch vor einer unumstößlichen Tatsache und einer klaren Erkenntnis: All der völkische Wahn der Überlegenheit war nichts als ein riesiger Irrtum!"
About the Author: Günther Siebert (Jahrgang 1926) wurde in Mannheim geboren und wuchs in Köln sowie im hessischen Melsungen - der Heimat seiner Eltern und Vorfahren - auf. Sein Vater Friedrich war Buchdrucker und als Sozialdemokrat gewerkschaftlich aktiv. Von den Nazis erhielt er Berufsverbot. Friedrichs erste Frau Berta Barbara schenkte ihrem Mann drei kräftige Söhne: Georg, Hugo und Günther. Sie verstarb früh 1934 im Alter von 44 Jahren. Friedrichs zweite Frau Elisabeth beglückte ihre Familie 1937 zusätzlich mit einer gesunden Tochter: Anna Elisabeth. Günthers ältere Brüder wurden bereits zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges zu den Eroberungsfeldzügen in den Osten abkommandiert. Günther folgte ihnen im Frühjahr 1944. Während Hugo fiel, entkam Georg in letzter Minute der Einkesselung in Stalingrad. Auch Günther überlebte das Chaos des Truppenrückzugs nur äußerst knapp. Nach einem abenteuerlichen Heimweg wurde er von einem Nachbarn verraten und geriet in amerikanische Kriegsgefangenschaft (berüchtigtes Camp 404 Marseille), aus der er im Herbst 1945 - nur 50 Kilogramm wiegend - heimkehrte.
