Wir lernen von unseren Eltern, unseren Großeltern und von unserer "peer-group" über vergangene und gegenwärtige Ereignisse und Werte, die vor und während des eigenen Lebens wichtig sind. Daraus versuchen wir unsere eigenen Werte herauszufiltern, die wir später an die eigenen Kinder weitergeben werden. Die Jugend sucht sich ihren eigenen Weg zwischen Anpassung und Auflehnung der Werte voriger Generationen, um den Weg in eine neue Generation zu finden. Wir können heute nur in dieser Welt leben, weil die vorigen Generationen dafür gesorgt haben, dass wir das Leben führen können, was wir aktuell vorfinden. Genauso müssen wir heute dafür sorgen, dass unsere Kinder später ein genauso Gutes oder sogar besseres Leben in dieser Welt leben können. Karl Mannheim hat sich intensiv mit dem Generationenbegriff auseinandergesetzt und heute, 90 Jahre nachdem sein Generationsaufsatz verfasst wurde, kann sich die Frage gestellt werden, wie aktuell seine Theorie noch ist. An welchen Stellen müsste sie sich der Zeit anpassen, um der Generation Y, um die es in dieser Arbeit gehen soll, in ihrer Eigenart gerecht zu werden. Denn die Generationen sind dem sozialen Wandel ausgesetzt und von der skeptischen Generation mit den Geburtsjahrgängen 1925 bis 1940 sind 60 Jahre später beispielsweise lediglich die Großeltern der Generation Y geblieben, welche mit alten Geschichten der früheren Zeiten, dazu beitragen, dass diese nicht komplett in Vergessenheit geraten. Denn die Erinnerung und das Vergessen gehören gleichermaßen zum ständigen Generationenwechsel dazu. Durch Fehler wird dazu gelernt und es entstehen ebenso neue Fehler, aus denen die darauffolgende Generation wiederum lernen wird. Ist es möglich die Generation Y, mit der Jugendphase vom Jahr 2000-2015 an die Generationentheorie Karl Mannheim
