Jede Kunst ist bis zum gewissen Grade Illustration, zumal jede junge Kunst. Die Empfindungen des Anfängers drängen notwendig nach materiellen Illusionen. Er besitzt noch nicht den ganzen Umfang der Sphäre, die seinem Spiele frommt, hat weder in seinem Publikum, noch im eigenen Herzen den Vorrat von Formen, auf den er anspielen kann, und bedarf der Präzision, um verstanden zu werden und sich selbst zu verstehen. Alle Erstlingswerke sind mitteilsam. Vor allem schaffen, sich äußern, mitreden. Eine Flut von Überflüssigkeit, von Beiwerk verdeckt das Eigentliche, ja dieses strömt rein unabsichtlich, zufällig in das Werk, dem Autor unbewußt, dem Empfänger unkenntlich. Jeder Anfänger ist primitiv wie das Kind, das den Mond abzeichnet, wie der Beginn der Malerei vor 600 Jahren. Ein Gegenständliches soll in Farben und Linien gebracht werden. Es wird nicht daran gedacht, das Gegenständliche zu verschönern, sondern es überhaupt zunächst wahrnehmbar zu machen. Der Künstler lauscht auf die Welt, und was sie ihm sagt, ist ihm bei Beginn wichtiger, als die Tiefe seiner Wiedergabe. Da ihm nichts anderes übrig bleibt, als aufrichtig zu sein, hilft er sich wie er kann mit seiner Empfindung, und diese Selbsthilfe gibt ihm, ohne daß er es ahnt, die erste Form, den Embryo der zukünftigen Künstlerschaft.
About the Author: Julius Meier-Graefe (*10. Juni 1867 in Resicabánya (deutsch Reschitz), Königreich Ungarn, Österreich-Ungarn; + 5. Juni 1935 in Vevey, Schweiz) war ein deutscher Kunsthistoriker und Schriftsteller. Er gilt als wichtiger Vorkämpfer des Impressionismus. Meier-Graefe schrieb wichtige Biografien zahlreicher Künstler, unter anderem über Paul Cézanne und Vincent van Gogh. Meier-Graefe gab einen entscheidenden Impuls zum Entstehen der großen Flüchtlingskolonie aus dem Deutschen Reich im benachbarten Sanary-sur-Mer während der folgenden Jahre (Thomas Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger, Ludwig Marcuse und andere).
