Eine Tragödie in fünf Akten Niemand kann dem grausamen Treiben des schrecklichen Tyrannen Holofernes Einhalt gebieten. Da geht die schöne Judith zu ihm; allein, unbewaffnet und gekleidet wie eine Braut. Erstdruck: Hamburg (Hoffmann und Campe) 1841. Uraufführung am 6.7.1840 in Berlin. Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: Friedrich Hebbel: Werke. Herausgegeben von Gerhard Fricke, Werner Keller und Karl Pörnbacher, Band 1-5, München: Hanser, 1963. Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgeführt. Neu herausgegeben und mit einer Biografie des Autors versehen von Klara Neuhaus-Richter, Berlin 2021. Umschlaggestaltung von Rainer Richter unter Verwendung einer Porträtzeichnung von Josefine Weinschrott. Gesetzt aus der Minion Pro, 11 pt. Henricus - Edition Deutsche Klassik GmbH Über den Autor: 1813 in Dithmarschen als Sohn eines Maurers geboren, wird Christian Friedrich Hebbel in den Diensten eines Kirchspielvogts vom Laufburschen zum Schreiber, kann auf die Bibliothek seines Dienstherrn zugreifen und veröffentlicht erste Gedichte. So gewinnt er Gönner und Unterstützer, kann schließlich in Heidelberg studieren, wandert vollständig mittellos über Straßburg nach München und später zurück nach Hamburg, ebenfalls zu Fuß. Ab den 1840er Jahren gelangt er langsam zu einer gewissen Bekanntheit, er erhält ein weiteres Stipendium und reist zu Heinrich Heine nach Paris, geht später über Italien nach Wien. 1845 wird er zum Dr. phil. promoviert, die Eheschließung mit Christine Enghaus bringt ihm ein sicheres Auskommen und die Freiheit für sein literarisches Schaffen, das bald schon große Anerkennung erfährt. Am 13. Dezember 1863 stirbt mit Friedrich Hebbel ein großer Vertreter des Realismus.
