About the Book

Need a more challenging activity? Have you considered a deep sea adventure for your science scholars ages 6 and up? This is the book where they will not oly learn "Fun Facts" about sea creatures, we set the foundation for why they need to lead conservation in your area of our water resources. Unlock the mysteries of the ocean by learning new vocabulary words. Join Jamel as he travels by airplane to Atlanta Georgia to visit his grandparents and share in his grandmother's deep sea adventure she never had. You will explore more about her African origins, culture and the foods of Nana's Gullah Geechee culture. Nana tells her grandson, Jamel about catching shrimp, crab, digging for clam and chipping oysters at the oyster reef, when she was a little girl. She went with her sister to catch their dinner daily on the Beaufort, South Carolina coast. There were no super markets, or chains of mega grocery stores in those days. If you live in a land-locked location, want to immerse yourself in the worlds oceans, get practice with conversational punctuation, contractions then read along with Jamel and his Nana on their 1st Deep Sea Adventure at the Georgia Aquarium. Many children don't know scientific names or the earth's continents, names of the oceans or seas. They can use this activity book to learn about the coastal habitat and travels of the sea creatures across the hemispheres. We also discuss the destructive forces of the tsunami, underwater earthquakes and typhoons. See what Nana was taught to do as a child, when she was faced with fears or natural disasters, it still works today. Their faith has stood the test of 5 generations. E kwere m i me oke m. "I agree to do my part."
About the Author: Jamel Thomas-Joyce is a 10-year-old Columbus, OH resident. He's an author, artist & illustrator. He loves sports & science almost as much as he likes to read & draw. We wrote Jamel's Deep Sea Adventure to share his summer trip with youth worldwide. He'd only imagined adventures before this quest of their own. We realized he knows more about his family's history & culture than most adults. His goal was to introduce students who have never been to an aquarium, or ocean & don't have money to travel to the deep sea creatures. Here's the opportunity to learn about the sea & fun practice for their annual test. We use the STEM approach in this technology integrated, creative problem solving activity book. His African ancestors, were former slaves & abolitionist. The Farrow family patriarch from Nigeria came to America enslaved. Called Geechee-Gullah, he & his wife were freed by 1858. Listed on GA's Dover Hall Plantation in 2 wills & 4 slave valuements, they lived in coastal GA. As a blacksmith, Peter & his wife Eliza (seamstress/midwife) hired themselves out. When they worked on neighboring plantations, he would preach in brush arbors & plan escapes. Co-Author, Mrs. Teresa R. Kemp, is a 5th generation Master Quilter & owner of Plantation Quilts & UGRR Secret Quilt Code Museum. Nana played games & was told she was a princess as a child. She & her sister would make crowns out of pretty things they found on the beach & sea shells. September 5, 2015 she became a real Queen Mother of Mankessim Traditional Area, Central Region of Ghana in West Africa. They gave her the name, Nana Efua Adadzewa the 1st, The Visionary Queen. Born in Baumholder, Germany to the late Dr. Howard & Serena (Strother) Wilson. She graduated from Berlin American HS & attended the Ohio State Univ. in Columbus, OH. She transferred to WV State Univ. & graduated with a BA. & from DeVry with a BS in CIS. A cancer survivor, she continues to be active thanks to the YMCA's Live Strong Program. As an Abolitionist, she fights Human Trafficking while preserving the cultural heritage. She documented her diverse culture for her grandchildren. The emphasis is on faith, family, service & conservation of the God-given resources of the earth. Teresa continues to do traveling exhibits with her family's historic artifacts & textiles to encourage preservation.
