Der vorliegende auf Tatsachen beruhende historische Roman beschreibt die spannenden und dramatischen Ereignisse während des amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges von 1775 bis 1783.
Der zwischen den dreizehn Kolonien und der englischen Kolonialmacht ausgebrochene Konflikt trifft die vielen Ansiedlerfamilien hart, welche sich in den Deutschen Niederungen im Staat New York eine neue Existenz erhofften.
Die noch junge und hübsche Bettina Goldberg, genannt Betty, welche am 15. Juli 1775 dem aus Deerfield stammenden Guy van Forst das "Jawort" gab, freut sich darauf, sich mit ihm auf dessen Farm, an der Frontier, im Tal des Mohawk, ein neues Leben aufzubauen.
Guy ist Mitglied in der Miliz unter Captain Deemoth. Auf Betty wirkt alles noch neu und verstörend. Als sie lernt, sich mit dem Leben an der Frontier zu arrangieren, werden die Ansiedlungen in den Deutschen Niederungen von den Verbündeten der Engländer, den Iroquois angegriffen und niedergebrannt. Guy und Betty können, wie einige andere, in eines der nahegelegenen Forts fliehen, verlieren aber ihr Heim und Betty nach der Flucht ihr erstes Kind.
In Fort Stanwix treffen fünf Oneida ein, von denen sie erfahren, dass das "Große Ratsfeuer" erloschen ist.
Der Bund der Haudenosaunee, der Irokesen, existierte nicht mehr. Die Tuscarora und die Oneida sind die einzigen Iroquois, welche auf Seiten der Amerikaner stehen. Alle anderen, wie die Seneca, Cayuga oder Onondaga, haben sich, wie der Mohawk, Thayendanegea, genannt Joseph Brant, für die britische Seite entschieden.
Die Angriffe von Brant und den königstreuen "Torys" werden für alle Ansiedler zum Alptraum. Fortan beginnt für Guy und Betty an der Seite der Miliz und ihrer neu gewonnenen Freunde und deren Familien, von denen jede ihr eigenes fesselndes Schicksal kennt, ein Überlebenskampf gegen die marodierenden Iroquois und die Truppen von König Georg III. Im April 1779 tritt die Kontinentalarmee unter Oberst Goose van Schaik in das Geschehen ein, um die Streitmacht der Iroquois zu zerschlagen.
