Au cours de leurs migrations jusqu'a la Mer Noire, les Goths sont vainqueurs de peuples divers, parmi lesquels les Huns, qui avaient ravage de vastes zones de l'Orient byzantin et de l'Empire romain d'Occident. Les Wisigoths, dans la bataille des Champs Catalauniques (451), sont des allies decisifs des Romains contre Attila, qui, apres la devastation de la Lombardie, se laisse persuader par le pape Leon le Grand de se retirer sur ses terres. A sa mort les Ostrogoths, auparavant ses vassaux, occupent une bonne partie de la Pannonie, puis, sous la conduite de Theodoric, entrent en Italie ou ils sont victorieux d'Odoacre. Theodoric est un souverain efficace qui, grace a une strategie politique et militaire avisee, fait aussi sentir son autorite hors de l'Italie, en Espagne wisigothique et en Gaule. Sa fille Amalasonte epouse son cousin Theodat, qui la fait ensuite assassiner, ce qui entraine l'attaque des troupes byzantines, victorieuses des Vandales d'Afrique: le general Belisaire fait prisonnier a Ravenne celui que Jordanes semble considerer comme le dernier roi legitime des Goths d'Italie, Witiges, epoux de Mathesuentha, la fille d'Amalasonte. Le couple royal est emmene avec ses richesses a Constantinople, ou, apres la mort de Witiges, Justinien fait epouser Mathesuentha par son cousin Germanus. Celui-ci etant mort peu de mois apres, Mathesuentha donne naissance a un fils, lui aussi nomme Germanus, en qui Jordanes semble voir le futur heritier legitime du royaume goth d'Italie, arriere-petit-fils de Theodoric et apprecie du Senat romain en tant que descendant de l'illustre famille senatoriale des Anicii, a laquelle etait apparente l'empereur Justinien. Celui-ci, a la fin des Getica, est explicitement loue par Jordanes, preoccupe de suggerer une solution politique de la guerre avec les Goths, qu'il considere comme les seuls defenseurs possibles de l'Italie contre d'eventuels envahisseurs comme, par la suite, les Lombards en 568.
