Im Fokus der Betrachtung steht dabei der Trend zur Digitalisierung als zentrale Herausforderung der Banken. In diesem Zusammenhang sollen zunächst die Hintergründe und Ursachen des aktuellen Handlungsbedarfs beleuchtet werden. Im Anschluss daran werden konkrete Lösungsansätze aus Sicht der Banken und mögliche Erfolgsfaktoren aufgezeigt und bewertet, bis abschließend ein Resümee gezogen wird. In Zeiten verschärfter Regulierung und zunehmend volatiler Erträge im Bereich des Investment-Banking besinnen sich Deutschlands Banken zurück auf das Privatkundengeschäft, welches in der Regel als konjunkturunabhängig und stabil gilt. Insbesondere in Anbetracht der gestiegenen Eigenkapitalanforderungen durch Basel III können die Kundeneinlagen zur Refinanzierung und die daraus generierten Erträge zur Verbesserung der Gewinnsituation beitragen. Dabei sehen sich Banken jedoch mit zahlreichen Herausforderungen konfrontiert. Zunächst einmal wird der neu entfachte Wettbewerb um Privatkunden durch das ungünstige Marktumfeld behindert. Das anhaltend niedrige Zinsniveau begrenzt die Möglichkeit der Banken, hohe Zinsen und damit attraktive Renditen auf Tages- bzw. Festgeld anzubieten, wodurch sich wiederum der Profitabilitätsdruck im Privatkundengeschäft erhöht. Zudem befindet sich Deutschlands Kreditwirtschaft seit Ausbruch der globalen Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise 2008/2009 und der europäischen Staatsschuldenkrise 2011/2012 in der schwersten Vertrauenskrise der Nachkriegsgeschichte.
