Questo dialogo, noto anche col nome di Simposio, è il più noto fra i dialoghi di Platone. La sua struttura non è in realtà quella di un dialogo ma una successione di orazioni effettuate dagli intellettuali ateniesi, che hanno per oggetto le lodi del dio dell'Amore (Eros). Troviamo qui, fra l'altro, la famosa descrizione dell'uomo ermafrodito, che, tagliato in due dagli dei, cercherà poi nella sua vita, la sua metà mancante, grazie alla quale, e solo grazie ad essa, ritroverà il suo senso di completezza e, quindi, la felicità. Ma, quando è il turno di Socrate di parlare, egli si limita a riferire l'insegnamento che Diotima gli ha somministrato, e che termina con queste parole: "Cosa succederebbe allora se uno riuscisse a vedere la Bellezza in sé, in tutta la sua adamantina purezza, e non già quella offuscata dalla carne, dai colori, da tutte le altre vanità terrene, se gli riuscisse, insomma, di scoprire la Bellezza in sé, divina e uniforme? Credi forse che sarebbe miserabile la vita di quell'uomo che fissasse quel punto, lassù, e lo contemplasse come va contemplato, congiunto con esso? Ed è soltanto in quel punto, contemplando la bellezza, con quella facoltà che la rende visibile, che egli potrà dar vita non a parvenze di virtù, dato che non è a una falsa immagine di bellezza che egli si è accostato, ma a una virtù vera, per il fatto che egli è nella verità; non pensi del resto, che avendo dato vita alla virtù vera e avendola continuamente alimentata, costui potrà diventare caro agli dei, ed essere anch'egli immortale, se mai altro uomo lo è stato?" Conclude "Il convito" il discorso di Alcibiade, innamorato di Socrate, che fa le lodi di quest'ultimo raccontando come tutti i propri tentativi di sedurlo non siano mai riusciti.Versione di Francesco Acri, 1913.
