Thomas Manns Werk ist historisch geprägt von der Darstellung des problematischen Verhältnisses von Individuum und Gesellschaft. Während seine frühen Werke aber primär vom Scheitern des Individuums erzählen, repräsentieren im späteren Werk vor allem die Figuren Joseph und Felix Krull unterschiedliche Modelle eines mit sich und der Welt versöhnten Lebens. Beide Charaktere sind zugleich auch als Rollenspieler zu begreifen, die durch die Übernahme sozialer und mythischer Modelle zu einer eigenen Form von Identität finden bzw. diese im eratischen Wandel mit spielerischer Freiheit auflösen. Greifen für Joseph noch von Goethe geprägte Bildungs- und Identitätskonzepte des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts, verkörpert Felix Krull die heiter-schelmische Variante des im 20. Jahrhundert diagnostizierten Identitätszerfalls. Ihre - bei aller Unterschiedlichkeit innerlich verwandten - Viten enthalten so auch ein utopisches Moment.
About the Author: Die Autorin: Kerstin Schulz wurde 1967 in Wuppertal geboren und studierte in Bochum Germanistik und Geschichte. Die Promotion erfolgte 1997 an der Fakultät für Philologie der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Hamburg.
