Rahel war eine beruhmte, hochst intelligente Frau, Schriftstellerin und Gesellschaftsdame, die gleichberechtigt mit den großen Geistern ihrer Epoche verkehrte. Ihr literarischer Salon war ein Zentrum der gelehrten und kunstlerischen Kommunikation ihrer Zeit. Mit welcher Freiheit und Grazie wusste sie um sich her anzuregen, zu erhellen, zu erwarmen! , schwarmte einer der Gaste ihres Salons. Von den Aufklarern ubernahm Rahel die Auf das Selbstdenken kommt es an! Gegen die Vorurteile der Standesgesellschaft gegenuber den Juden half das nicht, diesen Zwiespalt spurte Rahel zeitlebens, fuhlte sich fremd und benachteiligt wegen ihrer Herkunft. Diese Erfahrung fuhrte sie zu dem Es ist besser, nur eine Anekdote zu sein als ein Mensch mit Eigenschaften. In der geistvollen Atmosphare ihres Salons, in der auch das neue, romantische Lebensgefuhl Raum griff, schien der Zwiespalt uberwindbar. Zu den Gasten gehorten die Humboldt-Bruder, die Dichter Tieck, Jean Paul, Borne, der junge Heine, die Familie Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Furst Puckler. Ihre Freundschaften waren zahlreich, wahrend ihre Liebesbeziehungen scheiterten. Ein Graf machte sich davon, weil die Verbindung mit einem Judenmadchen ohne Mitgift nicht opportun war, ein anderer war rasend eifersuchtig auf die vielen Salongaste. Im Alter von 43 Jahren heiratete Rahel den Diplomaten und Publizisten Karl August Varnhagen von Ense; sie sei vollig frei und wahrhaftig bei ihm, schrieb sie, die durchaus kritisch notiert hatte, d die Frauen ganz von des Mannes Stand gepragt waren, kaum als Menschen mit Geist betrachtet wurden und die Ehe als hochsten menschlichen Zustand ansehen sollten. Die Lekture des franzosischen Fruhsozialisten Saint-Simon weitete ihren Blick, der sich nicht mehr auf die eigene Befreiung, sondern Gleichheit und Rechte ohne Berucksichtigung der Herkunft richtete.
