Hummelsbuttel gehort seit 1937 zu Hamburg. Heute leben 17.000 Menschen in Hummelsbuttel - sie nennen sich Hummelsbuttler und fuhlen sich wohl im Alstertal.Seit den 1950er Jahren erlebte Hummelsbuttel eine vollige Veranderung seiner bislang dorflichen Struktur, besonders durch den Bau von Großsiedlungen Tegelsbarg und Lentersweg in den 1970er Jahren. Seit dem Bau der Hochhauser im ehemalige Ortskern, der nun Hummelsbutteler Markt heißt, obwohl es in Hummelsbuttel nie einen Markt gegeben hat.Aber was wissen sie von dem ehemaligen Dorf am Rande der Großstadt, das in einem Bildband zu Recht "Liebes altes Hummelsbuttel" genannt wird?Es ist erfreulich, dass viele alte Lichtbilder gesammelt und veroffentlicht wurden. Aber was erfahren wir uber Leben und Wirken in den Fachwerkhausern? Wie lebten die Menschen unter dem Strohdach, wieviel Raume standen ihnen zur Verfugung? Wir finden keine Plane mit Raumaufteilung, keine maßstabsgerechten Konstruktions- und Ansichtsplane, keinen Hinweis auf die Wohnkultur in den Bauernhausern oder auf die Bewirtschaftung der Hofe. Tagelohner, Arbeiter und Handwerker, die es in großerer Zahl gab, werden nicht erwahnt, wir erfahren nicht, wie bescheiden diese mit ihrem Vieh unter einem Dach lebten.All dies zeigt sich erst, wenn wir uns eingehender damit beschaftigen. Mit dem vorliegenden Band soll versucht werden, diese Lucken zu schließen. Um unser Wissen uber das alte Hummelsbuttel zu erweitern, wurden viele altere Burger nach ihren Erinnerungen befragt und Aufmaßzeichnungen der noch vorhandenen Fachwerkhauser gefertigt. Weiter wurde in Archiven geforscht, in alten Zeitungen geblattert und versucht, neue Erkenntnisse zu sammeln. Der Zeitraum, auf den sich die gewonnenen Ergebnisse beziehen, reicht etwa vom Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts bis Anfang des Zweiten Weltkrieges.Erlauterungen zu den Haustypen sind allgemeinverstandlich gehalten, auf wissenschaftliche Bezeichnungen der Konstruktionsmerkmale wurde weitgehend verzichtet. Aus Tonbandaufnahmen sind Alltagsgeschichten und personliche Erinnerungen alter Bewohner hinzugefugt. Diese Erinnerungen alter Menschen vermitteln Geschichte aus erster Hand.
