About the Book

Hong Kong Hollywood is the inaugural novel by Dan Wasserman. It chronicles the dramatically intertwined lives of Paul Chen and Jon Davidson. Chen's story harks back to his first year in college where as a stellar student he is unfairly charged as part of a cheating ring and expelled. Since his immigrant parents had mortgaged their lives to the local tong his only real option becomes a life of crime. But, with his extraordinary talents he establishes business opportunities in the entertainment industry that over time eclipse his other illegitimate interests. Davidson, an entrepreneur, is aggressively building the first truly effective anti-piracy tool designed to protect movies, television, music, and video as the industry transitions from analog to digital. Considering this pre-dates the World Wide Web, file sharing and even DVDs, his company secures venture financing from some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley. The story is fast-paced with action occurring in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, the Bay Area, Hong Kong, Miami Beach, Toronto, Montreal, Cannes, and the Cinque Terre (Italy). It engages the reader with a tale that has far-reaching consequences pitting an angry, yet extremely successful man, against an unassuming hero. When faced with the risk of technology causing the loss of billions of dollars invested by the Hong Kong crime bosses, Chen fights back using every resource at his disposal including his teenage son. The outcome has far-reaching consequences, which can still be seen to this day.
About the Author: Starting my career in the advertising agency business right out of college I moved very quickly into the management ranks. However, being an entrepreneur at heart, after nine years I left to start my first business. This was the first company dedicated to competitive intelligence and serviced such clients as IBM, Shell Oil, General Foods, American Airlines, and Pepsico. It was sold to AC Nielsen in the early 1990s and after that I co-founded an anti-piracy technology company, unexpectedly becoming a global expert on the topic. This afforded me a number of speaking invitations at venues around the world. My next engagement was developing the promotion that ensured the continued success of the largest Internet service provider (ISP) in Canada and it was followed by a series of consulting engagements ultimately leading to my relocating to the Greater-DC area for eleven years. There I ran the government services end of an Internet technology firm, which after 9/11 inadvertently stumbled across a clandestine form of communication. For five years I was immersed in dealing with the well-known three-letter agencies, the Pentagon and other law enforcement. This culminated in becoming one of only three finalists for the 2006 International Association of Chiefs of Police - IACP "Innovation of the Year Award". In 2010 I returned to Canada where I now mentor young entrepreneurs on how to build multi-national business. Although I have published numerous business articles throughout my career, my passion has always been to write an action novel. With my technological background I also wanted to use this as the underpinning for any fictional writing. As such, I have now nearly three books under my belt. Hong Kong Hollywood is the first to be released and I plan to follow it with The Alien Patriot, (possibly this autumn). The Final Taboo, my third book is rapidly nearing completion of its first draft but still needs to go through the editing process.
