Les douze chapitres de ce livre tournent autour de deux poles, Aristote d'une part, la doxographie de l'autre. La doxographie, genre philosophiquement et historiographiquement sous-evalue, se situe au croisement de questions essentielles tant pour la reconstruction technique des systemes perdus (notamment presocratiques), que pour la question generale de la lecture des textes philosophiques. Elle constitue un fascinant depot laisse par un double questionnement fondamental, en direction de l'histoire d'une part (que fut-il dit ?), et de la verite d'autre part (que doit-on dire ?). Les deux points de vue sont irreductibles l'un a l'autre; tot ou tard, ils entrent en conflit, plus ou moins vivement, mais sans qu'une ultime resorption soit possible. Cette tension, fructueuse intellectuellement, pose aussi des problemes techniques, quand il s'agit d'exploiter le materiel transmis. Le livre explore cette configuration a differents niveaux, a propos des Presocratiques (avec plusieurs etudes sur la lecture qu'Aristote, Theophraste, et les Placita faisaient de Thales, de Parmenides, ou d'Anaxagore), a propos d'Aristote lui-meme, lu par Theophraste, a propos enfin des orientations de l'historiographie moderne de la philosophie ancienne. Deux chapitres d'inspiration distincte sont specifiquement consacres a la theorie aristotelicienne de la metaphore et au chapitre 7 du livre Lambda de la Metaphysique.
