Apres avoir decrit les moeurs et les coutumes des Egyptiens, Herodote entreprend dans le livre III de ses Histoires le recit de l'expedition du roi Perse Cambyse en Egypte. Si, dans cette partie du recit, l'idee d'un conflit entre les Grecs et les barbares d'Asie est quelque peu effacee, la narration de l'historien demeure structuree autour du reve d'un empire universel qui hante les Achemenides. L'histoire de Cambyse est entrecoupee par le recit d'evenements qui se deroulent entre Grecs, tels que l'histoire de Polycrate, tyran de Samos ou celle de Periandre, tyran de Corinthe. L'histoire telle que la depeint Herodote emprunte tantot a la tragedie tantot au conte. Ainsi, Cambyse apparait comme un personnage de tragedie victime de son demon, alors que la digression consacree aux Ethiopiens releve du merveilleux et de la fantaisie. Avec l'avenement au pouvoir de Darius racontee dans la deuxieme partie du livre III, Herodote esquisse l'idee du conflit entre Perses et Grecs d'Europe. La mission de prospection et d'espionnage envoyee par le roi perse en Grece constitue la premiere etape de la marche des Achemenides contre l'hellenisme. Herodote insere dans son propos une digression interessante qui temoigne de la reflexion politique menee en Grece a son epoque: il s'agit de la deliberation entre trois perses sur la meilleure forme de gouvernement.La Collection des Universites de France propose au lecteur le texte grec d'Herodote accompagne de la traduction francaise de Ph.-E Legrand. Le recit est divisee en deux grandes parties, l'une etant consacree a l'expedition de Cambyse en Egypte et l'autre a l'avenement de Darius. Chacune de ces sections est precedee d'une notice qui aidera le lecteur a en comprendre les enjeux historiques.
