Selon les propres dires d'Herodote, l'expedition menee par le roi perse Xerxes contre les cites grecques d'Europe fut la plus grande jamais entreprise dans le monde grec. Le livre VII des Histoires raconte la premiere partie de cette expedition. Le recit d'Herodote s'ouvre sur les deliberations de Xerxes et de ses conseillers sur l'opportunite pour les Perses de s'engager dans une telle guerre. Herodote a dresse un portrait memorable du roi Perse Xerxes, lui pretant une humeur despotique et un orgueil immense. La guerre qu'il mene est a l'image de sa demesure, comme en temoigne la construction d'un pont sur le Bosphore afin de permettre aux Perses de faire passer leurs troupes en Grece continentale. A cette figure representant l'Orient tel que pouvait se le representer un historien de culture grecque, Herodote oppose l'image de la resistance valeureuse de Sparte et d'Athenes tentant de reveiller le courage de ceux des Grecs qu'effrayait la puissance du grand roi. La narration de l'historien culmine avec le recit de deux batailles: celle des Thermopyles ou les Spartiates moururent heroiquement face aux barbares et celle de l'Artemision ou la flotte athenienne s'opposa aux navires perses. La Collection des Universites de France met a disposition du lecteur le texte grec dans l'edition de Ph.-E. Legrand accompagne d'une traduction. Le recit d'Herodote est separe en quatre parties chacune precedee d'une notice resumant son contenu et presentant les sources et les debats historiographiques du recit.
