About the Book

Sir Roy Harrod was much praised by Keynes for his early theoretical work and was one of the small group of young economists who worked with Keynes in the 1930s, helping him to develop the new theories that led to the General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money. Harrod's principal contribution to economics was the development of his theory of dynamic growth, articulated in several of the volumes in this collection. Beyond growth theory, Sir Roy worked on the theory of the firm and on international monetary theory, pursuing the development of international institutions such as an International Monetary Fund and a World Bank that would pervent the kind of breakdown of international monetary relations that had occurred in the 1930s. Palgrave Macmillan is proud to bring back into print this substantial collection of Sir Roy Harrod's main book-length works in eoncomic theory and to provide a resource that will be invaluable for economists and economic historians.
About the Author: SIR ROY HARROD was initially a philosopher - his first teaching job in Economics, at Christ Church, Oxford in 1923, was offered to him before he had ever studied the subject. He quickly prepared himself by spending time with Keynes in Cambridge and returned to Oxford to take up his post and to be further tutored by Edgeworth in microeconomics. He became part of Keynes' circle in the 1930s and was encouraged by him to develop his work on the theory of growth which he first subtantially stated in The Trade Cycle and went on to develop in many papers and books over the next thirty years. After a short period in the Statistics Department of the Admiralty during the War he returned to Oxford to work on the development of international monetary institutions, and published many books and papers on international monetary problems and the policies that should be pursued by government. In 1945 he succeeded Keynes as Editor of the Economic Journal and retained the Editorship until his retirement in 1966. In 1959 he was knighted for his academic and public service.

PETER OPPENHEIMER, who provides the Introduction to this collection, is a distinguished Oxford economist. He has recently transferred from a tutorship at Christ Church to become President of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.
