This handbook is a comprehensive, systematic source of modern nuclear physics. It aims to summarize experimental and theoretical discoveries and understanding of unstable nuclei and their exotic structures, which were opened up by the development of radioactive ion (RI) beam in the late 1980s.
The handbook comprises three major parts. In the first part, the experiments and measured facts are well organized and reviewed. The second part summarizes recognized theories to explain the experimental facts introduced in the first part. Reflecting recent synergistic progress involving both experiment and theory, chapters both in the parts are mutually related. The last part focuses on cosmo-nuclear physics -- one of the mainstream subjects in modern nuclear physics. Those comprehensive topics are presented concisely.
Supported by introductory reviews, all chapters are designed to present their topics in a manner accessible to readers at graduate level. The book therefore serves as a valuable source for beginners helping them to learn modern nuclear physics.
About the Author: Isao Tanihata is a Specially Appointed Professor at Osaka University, Professor at Beihang University, and a Director at the Center for Nucei and Particles in the Cosmos, Beihang University. He received his doctor of Science from Osaka University in 1975. After serving as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor at the University of Tokyo, a Chief Scientist and Executive Director at RIKEN, he joined the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) at Osaka University as a Professor, and was appointed as the current position at Osaka University in 2012. He has served in his current professor and director position at Beihang University since 2010 and 2011, respectively. He has been honored with various awards: Miller Award in 1975, Nishina Prize in 1989, APS Fellow in 1994, Professor Honoris Causa in 1997, Thousand Talent Program Professor in 2010, and Humboldt Scientific Award in 2011. He is also a member of the Academy of Europe.
Hiroshi Toki is an Emeritus Professor at Osaka University and a Specially Appointed Professor at the Center for Science and Technology under Extreme Conditions, Osaka University. He received his doctor of Science from Osaka University in 1974. After serving in an Associate Professor at Michigan State University and at Tokyo Metropolitan University, a Professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University, he was appointed as a Professor at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University in 1994. He also served in a Director at RCNP between 2001 and 2007. In 2010, he became the Emeritus Professor. He was awarded Humboldt Prize in 2001.
Toshitaka Kajino is a Specially Appointed Professor at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), a Distinguished University Professor at Beihang University, and a Director at the International Center for Big-Bang Cosmology and Element Genesis, Beihang University. He received his doctor of Science from the University of Tokyo in 1984. After serving in an Assistant Professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University, he was appointed as a Professor at 1984 in 1993, at the University of Tokyo in 1994, and at SOKENDAI (the Graduate University for Advanced Studies). He became the current Professor position at NAOJ in 2019. He has also jointed Beihang University in the current positions since 2017. He was honored with APS Fellow in 2004, Foreign 1000 Talents Plan in China in 2017, and Honorary State Special Recruited Expert in China in 2018.
